The Fox Ranger Trail Pants is one of the classics in the US company's range for good reason. With their slim fit, 4-way stretch and sophisticated cut, these trousers made from lightweight ripstop fabric are designed to take on just about anything from trail tours and enduro rides to bike park shredding.
The fabric is made from at least 85 per cent recycled material and the knee section is slightly pre-shaped so that knee pads fit comfortably under the trousers. Fox uses a practical ratchet strap for the fastening. Two zip pockets and close-fitting stretch cuffs on the legs round off the features. Clever: The particularly popular sizes 32, 34 and 36 are also available in a version with extended trouser legs.
We particularly liked the relatively close-fitting cut of the Ranger trail pants. The trousers don't flap unnecessarily in the wind when you really let it rip on the downhill. The leg cuffs are also particularly close to the lower legs - pure race feeling. In addition, the trousers don't constantly rub along the crank arms. The fact that you have to use your hand to slip them on is not really a problem. Another practical feature is the quick-release fastener, which can be adjusted in width thanks to the ratchet function.
The Fox trousers sit comfortably in the saddle without being restrictive. Even if the rear could be cut a little higher. There is enough room at the knees, even for the park-compatible knee pad version. The ripstop fabric is very robust and can withstand a lot, yet is stretchy enough to follow every movement. In the saddle, however, the material can be a little slippery, but this also depends heavily on the saddle surface.
The zip pockets are practical for storing your smartphone or keys, but would be better placed further to the side. The material itself is quite comfortable and not very sweaty. However, it can get a little warm on the ascent without the ventilation option - there are lighter and airier options on the market. If you don't want the trouser legs to hang just below the calf, or if you are a little taller, you should definitely opt for the longer version of the Ranger Trail trousers.
