Strong women in bike sport: Interview with Michelle ParkerPhoto: Catherine Aeppel, Red Bull Content Pool
The late bloomer: Michelle Parker (36) is a freeski pro from Truckee, California. Michelle started biking late in life and is now part of the Red Bull formation - a Rampage counterpart for women.

FREERIDE: Michelle, you are a professional skier, where did your love for mountain biking come from?

Michelle Parker: Ten years ago, my sponsor gave me a bike as a present. It wasn't love at first sight, because I went biking like I ski. That led to some painful falls. But I quickly got better, took part in races, rode in the bike park in Whistler and now love all facets of biking.

Are there any parallels with skiing?

Yes, but there are also great differences. For example, the deep snow is torn up so quickly and we rush from one run to the next. Thank goodness that doesn't happen with biking.

How high was your biggest drop?

Apart from a few stunts at Whistler, my biggest test of courage was a step-down gap. My friend Brooklynn Bell jumped. I watched, didn't want to jump myself, but overcame myself and just thought it was great. I don't know how high it was, but it was intimidatingly high.

Which mountain bikers have the most style?

Vero Sandler impresses me. Robin Goomes tricks even the most extreme jumps. Among the men: Brandon Semenuk.

How do you like this article?

You are part of the Red Bull formation. What is your plan?

To bring more women into the Rampage terrain. Our event has triggered a rethink in the industry. Who knows, maybe women will soon be competing at the Rampage.

What trick are you working on?

Whips!
