We tested the waistcoats on tour and during park laps. A wide temperature range, workmanship and fit were important to us. The testers (1.78 to 1.83 metres) tested all the waistcoats in size M.

The Patagonia Nano-Air is comfortable to wear. We like the fit, but it's not quite as sporty. We think the outer fabric made from recycled polyester could repel moisture even better. Good: the two pockets on the sides and on the chest. At temperatures above twelve degrees, the gilet quickly becomes too warm, but it also warms reliably in cold temperatures. Patagonia also offers fair trade certification. Lightweight! Expensive! Price: 180 Euro >> available at Bergfreunde

The Scott Primaloft Vest Light is the cheapest waistcoat in the test and is actually designed for ski tourers, but is ideal for bikers. The simple polyester waistcoat has a sporty, long cut and is comparatively thin. Best fit! The range of use is the widest, depending on the base layer. Also works well on cold summer days. Top: The dirt-repellent outer material can be quickly wiped clean. Poor: the quality of the zips. Two side pockets. Price: 100 euros.

The Fox waistcoat has a mountain bike-specific cut and is similar to the Ion waistcoat. The back is slightly longer and has a water-repellent softshell fabric, as do the shoulders. The polyester outer material provides efficient warmth. The air openings in the material provide ventilation, but the Fox Ranger Windbloc Fire is just as warm as the Patagonia and Ion. Smart: two pockets and a back pocket. Price: 150 Euro >> available at Tradeinn.
Material: Nylon - Number of colours: 3
The Platzangst Outbreak waistcoat requires a temperature drop, a cold outbreak, as the name suggests. Because the insulating material heats up. This limits the waistcoat to really cold days. You need to know this to avoid "heating" through the forest like a pressure cooker. In the Platzangst you look like a duck hunter, the only thing missing is the shotgun. A matter of taste. The Platzangst can also be worn casually or on ski tours. Price: 110 Euro >> available at Decathlon.

The workmanship of the Ion Shelter Hybrid Padded Vest is high quality and the fabric is comfortable to wear. On the trail with a rucksack, the back quickly gets warm. The waistcoat's range of use is almost on a par with the Patagonia or Fox, and the cut is also similar. Good: The Primaloft insulation is made from 100% recycled material. Also good: the goggle cleaning cloth in the side zip pocket. We liked the Ion best together with the Scott. Price: 180 euros.
"There are still very few waistcoats specifically for bikers - which is a shame, because they are ideal. Many waistcoats are too warm and your back sweats quickly on tour." Test leader Laurin Lehner, FREERIDE
