E-bike newbies and beginners in particular ask themselves: "How much does a good e-MTB cost?" We recommend at least 2500 euros - and for good reason.

"How much should I spend on a good e-MTB?" - this is probably the question most frequently asked by newcomers to the experts. If you look at the bike companies' offers, the price range starts at just under €2,500. The odd online bargain, DIY store or discounter will tempt you with even cheaper e-bikes. But you should keep your hands off them. Because from around 2500 euros at the earliest, you can get a solid E-MTB Hardtail with a decent frame and a good motor, which is also equipped for off-road use. However, you cannot expect high-quality equipment in return. When it comes to gears and brakes, manufacturers tend to opt for the cheaper versions of these e-bikes, and suspension forks are usually only available in basic versions with moderate functionality. Before retrofitting these components later for expensive money, it is better to put some money on the table right away. In our experience, you can get a reasonably equipped E-MTB hardtail for 3000 euros. With many specialist brands, the entry level is even at 3000 euros or more.

1000 euros more: This is how much good E-MTB fullys cost

With E-Mountainbike-Fullys you have to add about a grand on top. At least. Here are the entry-level prices at about 3500 Eurolike our Test of two affordable full-suspension e-bikes has shown. Here too, we recommend opting for the better-equipped models for around 4000 euros. For this, you get a decent chassis and durable components. In the Price range between 4000 and 6000 euros however, you make quite big leaps in terms of quality and performance. The price points here are highly competitive and a few euros more, for example for a better suspension fork, can really pay off, as our Test of nine E-MTB full-suspension touring bikes has shown.

In the High-end class over 6000 euros you don't get that much more performance. But this is where the battle for less weight begins. With the high-end fullys, you get true E-MTB all-rounders >> to the Test of the best all-round E-MTBs for 2021. Especially when it comes to components, every gram costs money. Even specialised bikes such as the new, lightweight Minimal Assist-E-MTBs play in the league beyond 6000 euros. Incidentally, the following applies to e-bikes: the more suspension travel, the more money you should budget for. This is because off-road capability increases with suspension travel. And the more serious the terrain, the more robust the equipment needs to be. That costs money.
