Error codes occur more frequently on E-MTBs. However, they are usually easy to rectify. Like here, where the brake disc magnet on the rear wheel had simply come loose.
Motor faults or battery malfunctions can really spoil a tour on an e-mountainbike. We show you the most important error codes for Bosch, Shimano, DJI, Fazua, TQ and co. and reveal how to get your e-bike running smoothly again.

No more motor power? Or the e-bike can no longer be switched on at all? This has also happened frequently in our everyday e-MTB tests. The e-bike troubleshooting begins. However, the majority of problems can be solved with a few tricks that work for every drive. If that doesn't work, the error codes for the respective motor will help. We show you how to get to grips with electronic problems on tour.

Fix motor faults quickly: 5 quick tips for every e-mountainbike

Most electronic problems on e-mountainbikes are trivial. If the bike can no longer be switched on, the contact between the battery and motor is usually faulty. However, it is often sufficient to simply remove the battery once and reinsert it. If the bike still does not react, remove the battery, check whether the contacts are clean and clean them if necessary. Alcohol is ideal, but a soft, clean cloth will also do on the road.

Also check the plug connections of the cables to the remote and display. In rare cases, an e-mountainbike could also be switched on again after we had plugged and unplugged the charger once. If the display on the e-bike shows an error code, simply switching the bike on and off often helps. Important: Do not put any strain on the cranks when switching on.

Often causes trouble. Classic e-bike spoke magnets in particular tend to twist, in which case the motor no longer provides support. Bosch error code table: CX4 and Smart System

  • Error 410, 418: One or more buttons on the display or control unit are blocked. Check whether any buttons are jammed, for example due to damage or dirt, and try to clean and release them.
  • Errors 414, 422, 423, 424: Connection problems with the control unit, motor or battery. Check connections and connections.
  • Error 431: Software version error. Restart the system. Sometimes the error can also be rectified by updating the firmware in the app.

  • Error 580: Software version error. Either a firmware update via app or the specialist dealer can help.
  • Error 591: Authentication error. Remove and install battery, restart system.
  • Error 602, 603: Internal battery error. Sometimes a system restart helps.
  • Error 605: Battery temperature error. Allow the battery to cool down or warm up.
  • Error 620: Charger error. Reconnect the charger, otherwise replace it.
  • Error 655: Multiple battery faults. Remove and install battery. Restart the system.

Error codes Fazua Ride 60

The top LED of the Fazua LED Hub or Control Hub is also the status indicator for the system. It can indicate status changes or errors.

  • Upper LED flashes blue - Ready for use: Once the battery has been installed, the display briefly flashes blue to indicate that the bike can now be switched on.
  • Upper LED flashes yellow - Soft error: If a "soft fault" occurs, the status display flashes yellow. The drive system is signalling that there is a temporary or non-critical fault, which in most cases leads to a loss of performance. If a "soft fault" occurs, you can continue to ride your Fazua bike, but the manufacturer recommends immediate maintenance by a dealer or service partner.
  • Upper LED flashes red - Hard error: If a hard fault occurs, the status display flashes red. If a "Hard Fault" occurs on a Fazua bike, it can no longer be operated and must be serviced. The bike must be returned to the dealer or a Fazua dealer partner.
  • Battery resetPress the operating switch down for at least 10 seconds
  • The motor provides irregular supportwhat can I do? One possible cause is that the torque sensor has been decalibrated, which leads to intermittent or irregular assistance. According to Fazua, the drive can recognise this automatically and calibrate itself during the ride. You do not need to activate this, instead simply continue to ride normally for 30 minutes. If this does not resolve the irregular riding sensation, the bike must be taken to a dealer or service partner.

Error with DJI Avinox

DJI has a special solution for its error messages. This is because the information and details can be called up directly on the screen. If an error is displayed, you can view details of the warning message and information on troubleshooting in the system status. The system status can be accessed by swiping upwards on the touchscreen and opening the settings.

Error codes Giant and Yamaha

Yamaha gives bike manufacturers a lot of freedom when designing the display. The error codes vary accordingly. Giant often relies on pure LED displays on the top tube - flashing LEDs indicate error messages. More information is available in the app. Other manufacturers, such as Haibike, show error codes in the classic way on the display.

Giant e-bike error messages

  • 1-2 flashing LEDs: Battery or motor fault. Remove and install the battery, restart the system.
  • Three flashing LEDs: Speed sensor error. Check the speed sensor wiring and magnet distance.
  • Five flashing LEDs: Engine overheating. Allow the engine to cool down.
  • Error A1: Sensor error. Switch off, wait 20 seconds, switch on again.
  • Error A2: Control unit error. Check cable connection.
  • Error A3: Bluetooth error. Switch off the system, wait 20 seconds, switch on again.
  • Error A5: Speed sensor error. Check speed sensor.

Yamaha-Haibike engine problems

  • Error SPD SNSR, CHK MAGNET: Check speed sensor and spoke/brake disc magnet.
  • Error 12, 13: Motor display communication error. Check connections, restart system.
  • Error 31 to 39: Internal defects in cables, sensors or drive shafts. Restart the system. If the error code persists, only the dealer can help.

Specialised and Rotwild - Brose error codes

Specialised error messages

Errors are usually communicated via the battery indicator LEDs on the top tube. If only individual bars of the display light up in red and blue on a Brose motor, there is an error that can best be read out via an app. If you don't have it to hand, you should check the critical points: Battery and contacts, spoke magnet, plug connections and cables. A system restart can also often help. New Specialized e-bikes with a TCU-2 display show the error code either unencrypted as "motor error" or "battery error". But sometimes only as "Error". In both cases, the app can help again.

  • Error 2: No battery recognised. Clean the contacts on the battery and connection cable.
  • Error 3: Engine error. Restart the system.
  • Error 4: No motor recognised. Restart system, check app.
  • Error 5: Battery and motor fault. Restart system, clean contacts. Otherwise go to the dealer.
  • Error 6: Button cell in the TCU must be replaced.

Red deer BMZ error messages

Bikes such as Rotwild's R.X 750 rely on displays from BMZ, which also show error codes. Weak point of the Hessian premium bikes: When braking, some abrasion from the brake pad often swirls onto the speed sensor and can interfere with the signal. Simply wipe it off with a soft cloth.

  • Error 10, 11, 12: Battery fault. The battery is defective or deeply discharged. Remove and install the battery, restart the system. Connect charger if necessary.
  • Error 31: Lighting installed incorrectly. Have the lighting professionally installed.
  • Error 44: Engine overheating. Allow the engine to cool down.
  • Error 60 and 85: Display error. Check wiring and plug connections.
  • Error 81: Speed sensor error. Check speed sensor and spoke magnet. Adjust and clean if necessary.
  • Other error code: Engine faults. These faults can often be traced back to defective sensors in the engine. Only a specialist dealer can help here.
