YouTube star Fabio Wibmer has triggered a real MTB boom among kids. With the Neuron Young Hero, sponsor Canyon has the perfect children's bike in its programme. The brand new version of the trail bike offers top functionality at a competitive price.

Functional, stylish bikes at the best possible price: that is the philosophy behind Canyon's Young Hero line. That in itself would be a strong selling point. That YouTube superstar Fabio Wibmer on Canyon for two years has fuelled the demand for Young Hero models among young people. Thirty million views alone Wibmer's "Home Office" clip which he posted online last year shortly after the outbreak of the pandemic. With spectacular stunts, sometimes in his living room, Wibmer skilfully showcased the bikes of his new sponsor. Presented around the same time Young Hero Neuron promptly became a bestseller. The reasonably priced trail bike with 130 millimetre suspension travel and 27.5 inch wheels was particularly popular with young bike park shredders. Jump sessions on the pump track and even touring were also possible with it. Now the revised 2022 model is going on sale. And it is even more sophisticated.

Neuron Young Hero: What's new about Canyon's kids' bike

What's new? First of all, the look. The current version comes in Fabio Wimber's signature look in white-grey with gold lettering. This looks classy and will not only appeal to Wibmer's large fan community. The frame made of hydroformed aluminium tubes has largely remained the same. The workmanship is top-notch, all bearings are of high quality. The 2022 YH Neuron model comes with a suspension fork and shock from Manitou instead of Rockshox, so that the suspension can be even better customised for lightweight riders. The fork in particular now reacts more sensitively. It is also 200 grams lighter. The product managers had to make tough calculations when it came to the equipment. After all, Canyon's declared, immodest goal was to offer the Young Hero as the most affordable trail bike for young riders on the market. 1599 euros is 100 euros more than before, but still a competitive price. In order to realise this, the bike was equipped with cranks and gears from Sram's super-affordable SX line equipped. There is no Tele support. However, it can be retrofitted. And instead of the usual Shimano brakes, this time there are Tektro stoppers, but this does not mean any loss of function.

Open mode on technical trails, closed platform mode on uphill sections: the red lever makes it child's play to adjust the suspension to the respective riding situation.

Made for bike park use and kids from 1.40 m in height

The Canyon Neuron Young Hero weighs 13.70 kilos without pedals (BIKE Lab measurement). The bike is not exactly a lightweight. This is partly due to the 4996 gram wheels (incl. tyres, sprockets, etc.). As with the previous version, the focus is clearly on downhill trails. This is more of a pro argument for children and teenagers who prefer to ride in the bike park anyway. If you are looking for a children's bike for sporty tours, you should look for a hardtail in this price category. Or in a few Tuning parts invest. In a lightweight cassette, for example. Or in lightweight wheels, which are available on the second-hand market for a reasonable price. The bike is available in sizes XS and 2XS. It is therefore also suitable for kids who are less than 140 centimetres tall.

We have already been able to test the Neuron Young Hero for several weeks. In the bike park. On everyday rides. And on tour. It's amazing how wide the range of use is. However, it quickly became clear that the bike really comes into its own when the downhill power provides the speed and not the leg power. However, this is not only due to the weight of just under 14 kilos including pedals. It is also due to the compact geometry, which is designed more for descending than for hours of cranking.Photo: Henri LesewitzWe have already been able to test the Neuron Young Hero for several weeks.
