When Bosch presents its innovations, industry giant Cube is not far away. The Upper Palatinate company brings four e-MTBs with the smart system. The Stereo Hybrid 140 in the test.

Marching as usual Cubes E-MTB models in step with the new 2022 model year. From the hardtail Reaction Hybrid to the Enduro Stereo Hybrid 160 the new system from Bosch is used. All four models also have the other technical updates in common. Also standardised: the most affordable equipment variants are based on the design and Bosch system of the 2021 models. This means that those who value the customised frames, the 750cc Powertube and the smart Bosch features will have to reach a little further up the shelf.

In the case of the best-selling Stereo Hybrid 140, this means that the new package is available from the SL model for €4599, while the Pro and Race versions rely on the older technology. In addition to the large 750 watt-hour battery, the new LED Remote control unit and the Kiox 300 display are part of the new package. new Bosch package. Cube supplies all bikes that rely on the smart system with both Kiox and LED remote. This gives the customer the choice of relying on full information with the display or minimalist equipment with LED remote only. Thanks to the plug-and-play system, the display can simply be plugged in and unplugged. The most striking innovation, however, is the 750 power tube. And this has caused the Cube engineers a few headaches. Because the seven centimetre longer energy carrier is not so easy to get into the bike. At Cube, this means that the smallest frame sizes will not have the luxury of the new features in the coming model year. Like the more affordable versions, the smaller bikes also rely on frames and technology from the previous year with a 625 mm battery. However, there are also positive innovations for smaller riders: the two smallest frame sizes are using smaller 27.5 mm wheels on the 29er models.

Under 25 kilos despite 750 Powertube battery

Another innovation is intended to counteract the concerns of many e-bikers. The 750 battery not only offers more range, but also significantly more weight. By optimising the frame and its wall thicknesses, Cube claims to have saved 14 percent of the frame weight, which should roughly correspond to the additional weight of the battery. The fact is: our Stereo Hybrid 140 TM test bike weighs 24.8 kilos. This means that it is not a proven lightweight, but is in fact roughly on a par with last year's models.

Conclusion on the Cube Stereo Hybrid 140 TM in the test

Self-runner! Unobtrusive! Simply works! Looking over the feedback sheets after our practical test, it quickly becomes clear that the Stereo Hybrid 140 remains true to its character. The bike can do pretty much everything and focuses on all-round suitability rather than specialisation. It is uncomplicated to ride, whether easy-going or in wild terrain. Both uphill and downhill. There are slight changes to the geometry. A slightly longer reach and steeper seat angle modernise the Stereo 140, but do not make it a completely new bike. With moderate values, especially for the head angle, Cube retains the neutral handling that makes the bike particularly balanced and interesting for moderate bikers.

The comfortable suspension and carefree equipment also play into its hands. But the bike also cuts a fine figure on demanding descents. The suspension defuses rough bumps, the grippy tyres are an enormous safety advantage and the powerful braking system easily keeps up on long and steep descents. The long chainstays prevent really agile handling, but facilitate a balanced weight distribution between the front and rear wheels. The rather high weight is also not exactly in favour of lively trail rides. However, in view of the very heavy battery, the 24.8 kilos are almost a positive factor. Most bikes with the new Bosch system in this price range will probably have more pounds on their ribs. On the other hand, the new Powertube 750 propels the Stereo to a record-breaking range. Tours with extra length and extensive trail detours can come!

CONCLUSION: Evolution instead of revolution. Cube has given the Stereo Hybrid 140 a modern look and the latest Bosch generation with mega range. The all-rounder character and strong price-performance ratio remain. Very good! No Trail-Extremo.
