Supertrail: The Blindsee Trail has a large fan base. Allegedly there were conflicts down by the lake with bathers. As a result, bikers will now be banned from 2027.
The Blindseetrail is one of the all-time classics. However, the trail close to the German border near Lermoos will soon be off-limits to bikers.

Over, done, closed. The Blindsee Trail in Tyrol - officially marketed as one of the region's flagship trails - will be closed to mountain bikers from 2027. This has now been unanimously decided by the Biberwier local council, as reported by the Tiroler Tageszeitung newspaper.

The problem: Shared trails (do not) work

The trail was officially designated as a shared trail - mountain bikers should be considerate, ride slowly and give priority to hikers. The theory. According to the municipality, the practice was different: Reckless downhillers, endangered pedestrians, bikers allegedly riding over towels on the lakeshore. The mayor of Biberwier, Harald Schönherr, told the Tiroler Tageszeitung newspaper: "Shared trails don't work. What is happening here is no longer possible."

The hunting co-operative and the community estate association had already demanded a closure the previous year - now the pressure has been eased.

Tourism association under fire

Particularly piquant: the municipality holds the tourism association jointly responsible. The problems have been known for a year and nothing has happened. Schönherr speaks of a "crowbar" that must now be used to "make things clear". Continued use is only possible with structural changes - in other words: separation of bikers and hikers and a new cycle path around the lake. However, this seems rather unlikely, as it would also be a huge intrusion into nature and even many bikers will scratch their heads when they hear this idea.

Our assessment

We know and love the Blindsee Trail - for many of the editorial team, it is one of the absolute classics. Yes, the upper part is fast and rough, but it gets cosy down by the lake at the latest because there is no gradient. Only here are the bathers. We didn't notice any of the conflicts described above - not even in high season. This makes the planned closure all the more regrettable.

The good news: the trail is still open. Fans should definitely plan a visit or two this season.

Born in South Baden, Laurin Lehner is, by his own admission, a lousy racer. Maybe that's why he is fascinated by creative, playful biking. What counts for him is not how fast you get from A to B, but what happens in between. Lehner writes reports, interviews scene celebrities and tests products and bikes - preferably those with a lot of suspension travel.
