Thanks to a speed sensor, the classic wheel-on-trainer with friction roller can also be used for targeted watt training (Tacx app) and virtual rides. The calculated power values are surprisingly accurate and the ride feel is good - especially when pedalling evenly. The tyre can only slip during acceleration. The brakes are controlled manually using a lever. The simple Tacx Boost roller trainer is relatively quiet and requires no power.
Worn tyre
If the mounted rear tyre is worn out after a long season anyway, you can give it the rest on the roller. Alternatively, fit a used tyre, e.g. a narrow semi-slick or a model with a centre tread.
Iso mat/yoga mat
An underlay not only protects the floor from puddles of sweat, but also dampens vibrations caused by certain oscillations. This also reduces the background noise. Alternatively, an anti-slip mat made of rubber granulate can also be used.
If you only see indoor training as a stopgap for stubborn winter days and don't regularly switch to the roller, you can save yourself software subscriptions for virtual rides. You can also get the distraction you need for 1-1.5-hour sessions for free online with podcasts, motivating music playlists or documentaries. You can find plenty of trails and mountain passes filmed with action cams on YouTube (e.g. at this Channel). Various clips from spinning instructors and special indoor cycling playlists are also available for free on YouTube and Spotify. If you want to take it easier, you can listen to your favourite podcast while cranking (our tip: Besenwagen) or browse through media libraries. With lots of playlists from professionals, our "Bike MAG" Spotify channel equipped. Top for roller training: Alban Lakata's selection.
