To keep motivation high and train twice a week, you should treat yourself to a smart direct drive trainer. Price: Around 600 euros.

Elite Suito

The quiet, fully-fledged smart trainer communicates with all common apps and portals via Bluetooth and ANT+. Although the flywheel mass is smaller than that of the top devices, it can also be used indoors to simulate 15 per cent inclines without any problems.

With the feet folded away, the Elite Suito roller trainer can be stowed away compactly and is easy to carry. Only in terms of precision are competitors such as the Tacx Flux S better. All standard thru-axle and freewheel versions can be fitted using adapters.

  • Weight: 15.4 kg
  • Max. Power: 1900 watts
  • Volume 67 decibels (TOUR measurement at 66 km/h)
  • Price: 599 Euro >> e.g. at Liquid Life or Rosebikes available

Welding catcher

Your own sweat can damage the bike in a similar way to road salt. The special cover protects the top tube and the control centre. This means you don't have to wipe it down as much afterwards. E.g. Tacx T2931, 25 euros >> available here.

Fan

A fan that simulates the lack of airstream is a must. On the one hand, you sweat significantly less, on the other hand, your body overheats during intensive sessions and your performance drops. Standard models are available for around 30-35 euros >> e.g. available here.

Bracket

With a stand, you always have your laptop, tablet or smartphone in view and ready to hand, even if the roll is in the centre of the room. Suitable holders with a stand are available for around 70 euros, e.g. from Elite >> available here.

RGT Cycling

RGT Cycling is still available in a free version. For just under nine euros a month, you can use the Magic Roads function to follow your own GPS tracks.Photo: Hersteller RGT Cycling is still available in a free version. For just under nine euros a month, you can use the Magic Roads function to follow your own GPS tracks.

Since a major update in November 2021, you can use the software with just one device and don't need a smartphone app to control it at the same time. Well-known tracks such as the Stelvio Pass or Cap Formentor as well as a gravel track in Tuscany are available. All courses are animated to a high standard and the driving dynamics are more realistic than in any other software.

The big plus in the Zwift comparison: RGT Cycling is still available in a free version. Although the functions are somewhat limited here, it's enough for occasional virtual rides - even group rides are possible.

A special feature is the Magic Roads function in the paid version. Simply upload a GPS track of your own tour and a short time later drive on the faithful replica. However, the tracks are not as richly animated as the twelve standard courses.

  • Fun factor 4/6
  • Cost: free of charge / 8.99 per month
