I am astonished. With the same low-lying damper as the big siblings Nomad or Hightower I could have seen the formerly petite Santa Cruz 5010 almost unrecognisable at the new bike presentation. In its new carbon guise, the 27.5-inch trail bike, which was last refurbished in 2018The only difference between the newcomer and the rest of the downhill-heavy Santa Cruz family is the shorter travel of 130 millimetres at the rear and 140 mm fork. Otherwise, with a total weight of 13.38 kilos, the newcomer gives the impression of a mini enduro bike.
A closer look at the equipment list confirms the first impression. The new 5010 claws its way into the forest floor with chunky 2.4-inch wide Maxxis Minion DHR2 tyres as standard - rather unusual for a trail bike. The small 27.5-inch wheels are also few and far between now that 29-inch tyres dominate this category. Paired with the 40 millimetre short stem and the high front end, the concept even makes enduro bikers who are fixated on riding fun sit up and take notice.
The facts:
Despite the new external appearance, the Santa Cruz 5010 sticks to its inner values. With a 475 mm reach and a 65.7 degree head angle, the new 5010 is slightly longer and slacker on the terrain. The 429 millimetre short chainstays (size L) grow with the frame size. The steep seat angle ensures a forward centre of gravity, which makes climbing easier and at the same time creates an upright, rather short riding position.
In addition to the € 8399 Santa Cruz 5010 CC X01 RSV with Reserve 30 v2 carbon wheels and Sram X01 Eagle groupset that we tested, there is also an XT version for € 7399, which also rolls on Reserve wheels. The high-quality CC carbon is only used on the two top models.
Four further 5010 models between 4399 and 7199 euros in sizes XS to XL follow below. Santa Cruz charges 3099 euros for the frame alone. Santa Cruz has named the same line-up especially for women after the former Dowhill and XCO world champion Juli Furtado.
