Minimal assist bikes are the absolute trend category for e-mountainbikes. However, this young category is still in the discovery phase. It started with extreme values for weight, battery capacity and motor power. This made these e-bikes very special.
The Spaniards from BH Bikes are taking a different approach with their iLynx models. A relatively powerful motor with 65 Newton metres and an equally above-average battery with 540 watt hours also make the specialists exciting for classic e-bikers who want a lightweight bike and don't need turbo power.
The Race version of the iLynx with less suspension travel already convinced us in the EMTB 5/21 test. The big trail brother comes with 150 millimetres of travel and more downhill-orientated equipment. There has also been an update for the in-house motor. The telemetric torque sensor is intended to further improve the riding experience. The drive is also said to be around 100 grams lighter.
The Spaniards want to make the 2EXMAG engine even lighter without sacrificing the characteristics of its predecessor. The unit is said to weigh 2.1 kilos. 250 watts of power and 65 Nm of maximum torque are to be realised despite the low weight. The permanently installed 540 watt-hour battery can be extended by 180 watt-hours using a range extender. BH Bikes claims a sensational weight of 16 kilograms for the complete bike. A figure that we won't believe until our scales in the EMTB test lab say the same. Based on our experience with the iLynx Race LT, we think a weight of between 18 and 19 kilos is more realistic. And that would still be a top value for this category! Four equipment variants, sizes from SM to XL are available. All with full carbon frames. Price: from 6499 euros.
No e-MTB category is currently developing as dynamically as that of lightweight, minimalist e-mountainbikes. Also in our print edition EMTB 6/2021 there are some News about minimal-assist bikes. Including: the first tests of the brand new bikes from Forestal and Transalpes!
EMTB 6/2021 is available from 8 December. Digitally, conveniently by post or in newsagents!
