The Chiemsee-Alpenland region has expanded its offer for cyclists. On World Bicycle Day on 3 June, the tourist region presented three new gravel bike tours that open up the gently rolling hills between the Inn, Simssee and Attel rivers. The routes utilise gravel paths, forest sections and riverside passages.

Topics in this article

The gravel area stretches from Lake Chiemsee to western Chiemgau, the Rosenheim and Wasserburg regions, the Bavarian Inn Valley and the Mangfall Valley. The south borders on Tyrol. The Chiemgau Alps with Kampenwand and Hochries as well as the Mangfallgebirge with Wendelstein and Sudelfeld characterise the landscape.

The new gravel routes combine fast gravel sections with quiet natural trails and are aimed at riders who want to combine a sporting challenge with a scenic experience. The starting points are Bad Endorf and Wasserburg am Inn. All three routes are accessible without a car thanks to the railway connection.

From Bad Endorf to Lake Simssee

The first route starts in Bad Endorf and leads along gravel paths through moorland and forest landscapes. Fast gravel passages run along the Zillhamer Ache. A long section on the Inn dam offers views of the Inn floodplains and the Alpine panorama. The finale reaches Lake Simssee with a direct view of the water.

Through Innauen and Maxlrainer Forst

The second tour starts in Wasserburg am Inn and follows the river to Rott am Inn. From there, the route leads through extensive forest areas with long gravel passages. It rolls smoothly along forest paths. Maxlrain Castle with its brewery and beer garden is about halfway along the route. The route runs back northwards through hilly country. The final section follows the River Attel with small bridges and unspoilt paths.

Round tour in the Inn Valley

The third tour also starts in Wasserburg am Inn and leads northwards along the river. The route combines fast gravel paths with quiet riverside passages and short climbs. Long sections run directly along the water. The Au am Inn monastery with its Bräustüberl brewery offers an opportunity to take a break. The route returns to the starting point along the Inn.

Navigation and further information

The tours are not signposted. The ChiemseeAlpenApp is used for navigation. Further gravel bike tours and tips are available in the app. You can find even more information about gravel biking in the Chiemsee Alps at chiemsee-alpenland.de/discover/cycling/gravelbike .
