Cycling in temperatures of 30 degrees and above? Not really a good idea. Anyone who does decide to get on their bike on hot summer days should at least be properly kitted out. We explain which materials work best in sweltering temperatures and highlight products that keep the body cool and help prevent heat exhaustion as much as possible.

Topics in this article

When the sun is beating down and the tarmac is sizzling, every ride becomes a real challenge. Cycling in high temperatures It’s more than just ‘sweating a bit more’: dehydration, a drop in performance and overheating can set in after just a few kilometres. Ambitious cyclists in particular often underestimate just how much heat puts a strain on the circulatory system – and just how crucial proper preparation is.

One key factor: the right kit. Breathable fabrics, clever ventilation and light colours are particularly in demand right now. Anyone who chooses the wrong materials for their clothing risks overheating and will soon feel as though they’re sitting in the saddle wearing a polar suit. Helmets and accessories also need to perform better than usual in summer conditions – think ventilation and UV protection.

In the following article, we’ll show you what kit and clothing will help you keep a cool head, even on hot days.

The best materials for hot days in the saddle

The key is to choose fabrics that wick moisture away from the body quickly whilst allowing plenty of air to pass through. The following have proved particularly effective:

1. Polyester (functional fibres)

A cycling classic – and for good reason. Modern polyester fabrics are lightweight, dry extremely quickly and reliably wick sweat away from the skin. Combined with special weave structures (mesh, honeycomb), this creates a cooling effect through evaporation.

2. Polyamide (nylon) with elastane

Slightly more durable than polyester and often used in close-fitting jerseys and bib shorts. When blended with elastane, it ensures a perfect fit without compromising breathability too much. Important: High-quality versions use microfibres that also ‘breathe’ well.

3. Mesh fabric

Less a material than a construction method – but a game-changer in hot weather. Large, mesh-like panels (e.g. under the arms or on the back) allow air to reach the skin directly and ensure maximum ventilation.

4. Merino wool (lightweight & suitable for summer)

It sounds counterintuitive at first, but it works surprisingly well: thin merino fabrics regulate temperature, absorb moisture and release it in a controlled manner. On top of that, they offer natural odour protection – ideal for long, hot days.

In short:

Opt for lightweight, synthetic technical fabrics with an open weave – or fine merino blends if you prefer a more natural feel. Cotton, on the other hand, has no place in the saddle: it soaks up moisture, dries slowly and quickly turns into a sauna against your skin.

Don’t forget your sun protection!

Also UV protection In summer, it’s not just a nice-to-have, but an absolute must. Anyone who underestimates the importance of sun protection risks not only sunburn but also long-term skin damage. The good news is that with the right strategy, your skin will stay protected even on long summer rides.

Clothing: Your first layer of protection

Opt for jerseys and shorts with UV protection (UPF). High-quality cycling clothing often has a UPF of 30 to 50+, blocking out a large proportion of harmful radiation. Important:

  • Tightly woven fabrics provide better protection than ultra-thin, permeable materials
  • Light colours reflect more sunlight and do not heat up as much
  • Arm warmers and leg warmers are versatile accessories when you need extra protection

Sun cream: a must for exposed skin

Any exposed skin – the neck, face, forearms and calves – should be protected with a high-factor sun cream SPF (at least 30, preferably 50). Please note:

  • Sweat-resistant products, specially designed for sport
  • Apply well in advance (approx. 20 minutes before the start)
  • Reapply sun cream regularly on long trips

Timing and route selection

If possible: cycle early in the morning or late in the evening, and avoid the midday sun. Forest sections, higher altitudes or routes with more shade make a noticeable difference in hot weather. Racing across the exposed plains on a road bike in the blazing midday sun is not a good idea. Relaxed rides on a gravel bike through the woods, perhaps even with a quick dip in the lake, are by far the most recommended.

Stefan Frey is from Lower Bavaria and loves the mossy, loamy trails of the Bavarian Forest as much as the rugged rock of the Dolomites. For technical descents, he is prepared to tackle almost any ascent - under his own steam. As an accessories specialist, he is the first port of call for questions about equipment and add-on parts, while as head of copywriting he sweeps the language crumbs from the pages of the BIKE print editions.
