Powerful, high-torque, sporty: these are the attributes that characterise the Yamaha engine the character of Haibike e-MTBs for years. Now there is a completely new version of the drive. It's called the PW-X3. And the newcomer has primarily become smaller and lighter, while still delivering a striking amount of power. We have already been able to get a first impression of the motor in the new Giant Reign E+ win. And the Schweinfurt brand Haibike has taken the opportunity to launch a whole range of new e-MTBs for the market launch of the PW-X3. From the sporty Nduro with 180 millimetres of suspension travel, to the off-road all-rounder All Mtn and the moderate touring bike All Trail, right through to the everyday powerhouse Adventr.
180 millimetres of suspension travel, MX wheel mix, solid aluminium frame with sporty geometry: the new Nduro is the most downhill-hungry model in the Haibike range. Haibike praises the long-stroke model as a fun machine for rough terrain, bike park excursions and enduro trails. The flat head angle (63.5 degrees) and the grown-up reach (480 mm in size L) are proof of this. However, the bike should not shy away from uphill challenges either. The bike thus follows in the footsteps of the very high-climbing All Mtn models with carbon frame. In addition to the steep seat angle, the rather long chainstays of 460 millimetres should also contribute to this. Although the motor has become significantly more compact (20% according to the manufacturer), it is still built quite far back, making very short chainstays almost impossible to realise.
According to the manufacturer, the new PW-X3 delivers 85 Newton metres. At 2.8 kilos, it is significantly lighter than its predecessor and also weighs less than the competition from Bosch and Brose. The newcomer gets its power from a 750 watt-hour battery. But that's not all: Haibike has developed the option of adding a range extender to the down tube. This means that an additional 360 watt hours can be taken on tour. This feature sets the new Haibike models apart from many of their competitors. The additional battery should work for all frame sizes and be very easy to connect and disconnect. The low-cost models come with a 630 battery as standard, but it is exactly the same size as the 750 and can therefore be easily replaced.
As already mentioned, it's not just the enduro model. Haibike is also launching three other platforms with Yamaha's PW-X3. An All Mtn with 160 millimetres of travel, the moderate All Trail tourer with 140 mm of suspension travel and an Adventr SUV all-rounder with full equipment suitable for everyday use. Details will follow at a later date. The same applies to information on availability. In the current tense situation, Haibike does not yet want to make a clear statement on this. However, the Yamaha bikes will probably no longer be in the shops in 2021.
