On our test route, the Tschilli trail in Latsch, the new Giant Reign 1.5 Ltd a real gain. Hardly any other Enduro MTB conveyed more smoothness and confidence when things got fast and rough. On the other hand, the Reign demands physical effort. Other enduro bikes are better at playful handling and lifting the front wheel in a relaxed manner. Compared to the Reign top model with steel spring shock absorber (BIKE 12/17) the rear suspension with air damper provides 14 millimetres more travel. Both the fork and rear suspension work well, but without compression damping they are a little light through the travel. With more compression damping, however, the sensitivity suffers. Uphill, the rear suspension has to be steadied with the platform when pedalling. The 12-speed drivetrain, chain guide with bashguard and solid tyres score points in terms of equipment. In addition, the top-quality aluminium frame with carbon rocker weighs less than three kilos, which also benefits the overall weight.
Pure-bred race enduro MTB with well thought-out equipment and good weight.
The alternative: The Giant Reign 2 costs 400 euros less and has Rockshox suspension, Shimano SLX gears and Deore brakes.
