Top athletes, like those on the Wilier Triestina Pirelli Factory Team, also need the right race bike. The new Wilier Urta Max SLR should therefore be versatile above all and have all the features you need for MTB races and demanding trails: more and adjustable suspension travel.

The new Urta Max SLR from Wilier Triestina was designed with a dual focus - mountain bike racing and fun on challenging trails. We have already tested the Wilier Urta SLR and its drive power was particularly noticeable. In terms of stiffness, however, it was not quite as convincing. The new Urta Max SLR now has more suspension travel in the frame and a three-way adjustable suspension system at the rear. More on this later; first, the frame and its features.

Wilier Urta Max SLR: 2 triangles = 1 frame

The frame of the Urta Max is made from a high-modulus carbon fibre, which, according to Wilier Triestina, ensures maximum stiffness only when needed. The same material is used in all of the manufacturer's high-end products. Another property of the HUS-MOD carbon fibre is that it is able to absorb micro-vibrations caused by the unevenness of the trail. Two triangles are the components of the frame, whereby the cables are completely integrated into the frame in the front triangle, which should favour stiffness, especially in the steering area. The second triangle of the Urta Max in the rear triangle has been developed as a single pivot solution - a swing arm that is installed between the down tube and the rear axle. The new and longer suspension travel of 120 mm fits in perfectly. Speaking of stiffness, a so-called jumper was used between the two chainstays for torsional stiffness. The strongly inclined stem with -27 degrees should ensure good power transfer on the mountain, as it enables a very sporty riding position.

3-fold damper system from open to hardtail

Wilier Triestina has optimised the compression ratio so that it works well on all types of terrain. Rear shocks from Rockshox and Fox are fitted as standard, which have a spring travel of 45 mm. The interesting thing about the suspension system is that it can be used in three different ways - depending on requirements. When fully open, the entire suspension travel can be utilised. This is particularly interesting for descents that are technically demanding. The middle stage of the Wilier Urta SLR Max ensures maximum traction, which can be used well on more demanding climbs or moderately uneven surfaces. The last stage completely blocks the suspension system and makes the bike extremely stiff. According to the manufacturer, this achieves a ride behaviour similar to that of a hardtail mountain bike. A system similar to the one Scott offers with its Twinloc lever - but this controls the fork and shock simultaneously.

Wilier Urta with the geometry for racing

The idea behind the geometry of the Urta Max was to create a compact racing position while still being able to fit a fork with 120 mm travel. The reduced stack and extended reach ensure this. The bottom bracket has also been lowered. This is intended to improve the riding position. In numbers: For size M, the stack would be 598 mm and the reach 443 mm. The headset angle is 67.5 degrees and the seat tube is 75 degrees in the frame.

Two well thought-out extras

With a double bottle cage and a Vario seatpost as standard, the Wilier Urta SLR Max has extras on board that are also useful in races. The telescopic seat post is available with different suspension travel depending on the size. From 100 mm travel for sizes S and M to 125 mm for L and XL.

The Urta SLR Max was inspired by use on the race track and, according to Wilier Triestina, was developed with the aim of being versatile. This is also reflected in the drivetrain. A chainring with a maximum of 38 teeth can be fitted at the front. The standard UDH derailleur hanger is therefore compatible with the Sram Eagle groupsets. The Urta SLR Max has also been fitted with a special cover to protect the rear triangle and bearings. The 70 mm clearance in the rear triangle provides plenty of clearance for fat tyres and mud. The price of the new race MTB ranges from 6,200 euros with Shimano XT equipment to 11,200 euros with Sram XX SL.
