If you are looking for the ultimate in lightweight wheels, tubeless or a particularly low weight, you are probably better off reading our Gravel tyres (tested here) further. For all everyday cyclists, Schwalbe has developed the Green Marathon but a really exciting tyre in the range that scores highly on various criteria.
As the name suggests, the Green Marathon also inherits the strengths of Schwalbe's classic touring tyre. High mileage, uncomplicated handling, fast rolling. The special thing about the Green Marathon, however, is its composition: the tyre consists of 80 percent recycled and renewable raw materials and is even the first tyre with carbon black from Schwalbe's ground-breaking tyre recycling programme (read more here). This alone reduces the carbon footprint in the production of the Green Marathon by around 40 per cent. The Green Marathon is therefore considered a milestone on the way to a closed production cycle. Schwalbe has already won various sustainability awards for this.
More touring and e-bike tyres in the test with laboratory and practical impressions can be found under the following links:
What is exciting, however, is that the tyre's green conscience is not significantly detrimental to its riding characteristics in practice. The Green Marathon rides smoothly and rolls well. Compared to classic e-bike tyres, it damps and accelerates better and is slightly lighter. Even compared to the best Pure Contact touring tyre from Continental and Schwalbes Marathon Efficiency (tested here) the Green Marathon has nothing to hide. It's just a little heavier. The Greenguard puncture protection insert - also made from recycled material - provides the tyre with a high level of puncture protection. Foreign bodies can penetrate the tyre somewhat more easily. However, thanks to the thickness of the Greenguard, the inner tube should remain protected for an extra long time. What's more, with an RRP of just over 30 euros, the Green Marathon is also really attractive for your wallet.
The Green Marathon is a good-natured tyre. What's more, it is the first tyre with a significant recycled content and is also really cheap. It rolls well, but the Green Marathon is slightly inferior to its more expensive competitors in terms of weight and puncture protection. Nevertheless, a clear recommendation for its riding characteristics and price. - Adrian Kaether, Editor Test & Technology
