The requirements for tyres have also changed somewhat with e-bikes. Rolling resistance and weight? Not quite so crucial. But the tyre should last a long time and offer massive puncture protection. Almost all tyre manufacturers now have an e-bike touring tyre in their range. At Schwalbe it goes by the name of Energiser Plus.
Special e-bike tyres are particularly stable and durable. Rolling resistance and weight are of secondary importance, as the motor helps here. However, almost all normal tyres are also approved for e-bikes. Those who prioritise lightweight construction, off-road grip, damping or rolling resistance will therefore often be happier with conventional tyres.
It's clear that the Energiser, which has just been completely revamped, cannot deny that it borrows from the successful Marathon model. The closed profile has small drainage channels for water. The centre section is kept smooth for fast rolling. The sides have a diamond structure that is designed to interlock even better with the ground.
On the road, the Energizer rides very smoothly, without any rough edges. The handling is very predictable, the borrowing from classic touring tyres would be obvious even without looking at the tread pattern. The puncture protection is predictably excellent with the full 3 millimetre thick Greenguard and triple carcass layer under the tread.
Disadvantage of the stable construction: The tyre rides quite tightly with normal air pressure. We would therefore choose a slightly lower pressure than usual for more comfort. Especially as the stability of the tyre clearly provides this. The diamond structure on the outside of the tyre is impressive in theory. In practice, however, we didn't notice a big difference in grip compared to more classic touring tyres. Fine gravel is not a problem with the Energizer. Beyond that, however, the Energizer is no longer in its element.
The newly developed Energizer Plus with a smooth profile in the centre and slightly diamond-cut shoulders is an absolutely solid performer at a fair price. High puncture protection but also high weight and firm damping. Otherwise, the tyre rides very smoothly and easily, even on fine gravel. - Adrian Kaether, test editor at BIKE
