An aluminium wheelset for 680 euros doesn't have to be extravagant, but it has to deliver on the trail. We put the Newmen Beskar 30 Trail through its paces.

The Newmen Beskar 30 Trail wheelset is extremely unobtrusive: no escapades in terms of price, weight and sound. So everything as it should be with a 29-inch wheelset for trail bikes? We put the Newmen Beskar 30 Trail to the test in practical use.

The Beskar 30 Trail mountain bike wheels obviously fit perfectly into Newmen's product profile. The Allgäu-based company is known for functional and stylish parts with a certain degree of understatement. Parts from Newmen are available exclusively in black and without any dramatic muscle flexing from the PR department. The Beskar 30 Trail wheelset is inconspicuous: "reasonable price, maximum aluminium performance" can be read on the product page. This is probably exactly the combination that many bikers are looking for in a versatile piece of sports equipment. We fitted the Newmen Beskar 30 with Fade MTB hubs to a trail bike and chased the wheelset through the terrain without mercy.

Reliable companion for all occasions

The Newmen Beskar 30 Trail wheels are the successor to the popular Evolution SL A.30 model and are designed to offer even more performance for a manageable cost. Thanks to more stability in the rim, Newmen now promises improved dent resistance and greater durability. The wheelset is based on different rims: The Newmen Beskar 30 Light is used at the front and the Newmen Beskar 30 Base at the rear. In this way, the German manufacturer aims to achieve the optimum combination of robustness and light weight. At 1750 grams, they are light for a trail wheelset with aluminium rims and should also cut a fine figure in touring use. Newmen also approves the wheels for e-bikes and up to a maximum system weight of 150 kilos. This creates confidence.

The Newmen MTB wheelset in the test

The Newmen Beskar 30 Trail wheels are easy to set up. With standard tyres, the tubeless setup works without any problems and in the usual manner. The fact that the hubs only come with a six-hole disc mount and are therefore not compatible with brake discs with a centre lock mounting standard should be manageable in the vast majority of cases. The weight, which is on a par with other lightweight aluminium wheels as well as many carbon models, is already pleasing in the hand. The workmanship is impeccable. The black aluminium finish and the discreet grey decals blend in well with any bike. So there's nothing to complain about here.

The Newmen Beskar 30 Trail wheelset also cuts an inconspicuous figure on the trail - in a positive sense! The quiet freewheel sound is immediately noticeable and is completely drowned out by the noise of off-road riding. The Newmens glide along quietly, leaving acoustic space for nature and the workings of the bike. The acceleration is sufficiently direct and stiff so that nothing stands in the way of a short sprint. During the test period, we had no problems with the durability of the aluminium rims. Although we fitted the Beskar 30 rims with thin-walled Maxxis tyres and they had to put up with the odd puncture at low air pressure, the wheelset did not develop any defects. The spoke tension fits, the construction holds. The 30 millimetre width hits the sweet spot on the trail bike perfectly and the rim gives the tyres good grip.

Conclusion

The Newmen Beskar 30 does not shine in bright colours, nor does its freewheel screech. On the contrary: the Newmen wheels are a delight precisely because of their discreet character and quiet background noise. The weight and price are a good match for a high-quality trail bike without the need to go to the budget. Stability and handling convinced us in the test. - Jan Timmermann, BIKE editor
