With the new Phase and Beskar wheel series, wheel specialist Newmen is launching completely new products on the market. The Allgäu-based company is also saying goodbye to the previous model names. The Phase series consists of wheels with a 30 millimetre rim width and carbon rims, while the Beskar wheelsets are the more affordable counterparts with aluminium rims.
Based on the successful Advanced SL rims, Newmen has developed a completely new series of carbon wheels. The series consists of one wheel each for Cross Country, Trail and Enduro, adapted to the area of use. The rims and spokes are designed to be optimally matched to each other in order to create the ideal conditions for the respective area of use.
The Phase series offers a choice of three different carbon rims - Light, Base and Strong - depending on the discipline. With an internal width of 30 millimetres, these rims are designed to offer both stability and lightness. The Phase Light rim has already been tested in the World Cup and weighs just 1350 grams for the front and rear wheels. The Phase Trail version, on the other hand, relies on the more robust Base rim on the rear wheel. This should ensure more stability when riding in more demanding terrain. The Phase Strong rims were developed for enduro use, which allow a maximum system weight of 180 kg and are therefore also suitable for demanding enduro races and bike parks.
Compared to the previous version, the rims are said to have retained their good level of impact resistance. At the same time, the weight has been reduced by 50 grams. In addition to the carbon rims, the spoke thickness has also been optimised. This is intended to achieve an ideal balance between the area of use and the front and rear wheels. In combination with the Fade MTB hubs, the manufacturer promises to offer mountain bikers the most stable carbon wheels in its product range - the new wheels should even be suitable for use on e-MTBs.
Parallel to the carbon wheels, the Allgäu-based company has also put new aluminium wheels on the hubs with the Beskar series. Unlike the Phase carbon line, however, the aluminium wheels are available in a total of four specific models for cross-country, trail, enduro and downhill use. The focus here is on price-conscious bikers who want wheels that they can rely on in any situation.
The new aluminium wheels are based on three aluminium rims that were developed in the Allgäu. These rims are designed to offer maximum dent resistance with minimum weight. Depending on the area of use, the Beskar rims are combined with either the lightweight FADE MTB hub for the front or rear wheel. In the Enduro and Downhill versions of Beskar, not only the number of spokes is increased, but also their thickness. This should ensure greater rigidity and resistance in difficult terrain. The 30 millimetre wide aluminium rims with a flat profile should achieve good impact resistance values in their weight classes on the test bench - both in comparison to their predecessors and the competition. However, it remains to be seen whether the welded aluminium rims can meet the requirements.
All new Newmen wheels will be available in stores from 1 March 2024.
