The Jam is the all-rounder, The Sam is the enduro heavyweight. The Thron is the third in the line-up and tends to take a back seat amongst performance-focused cyclists. This is partly because the Thron offers the widest range of capabilities: long tours, gravel or trails, everyday use or mountain bike rides – the Thron is designed to handle it all. With 150 millimetres of suspension travel at the front and 140 millimetres at the rear, combined with easy-to-handle geometry, the Thron aims to provide a low-threshold entry into the world of motorised full-suspension bikes, whilst or the Aventura touring bike with full suspension and low step-through frame flanked...
For the 2027 model year, the Thron is getting a practical update in the form of a larger battery in the entry-level version. Across the entire range, a 720 Wh variant replaces the previous 600 Wh version. Interestingly, despite having a similar capacity, the 720 battery is considerably cheaper than the larger 800 model – a full 300 euros. Added to this are new colours, a refreshed set of components and, as with all Focus e-MTBs this model year, a simplified model name.
With the 2027 model year, the Thron is also losing the superscript “²”, which for years identified all Focus e-bikes as motorised bikes. The suffix indicated that there was an analogue counterpart without a motor – a parallel world that will no longer exist at Focus in future. The Thron² will therefore simply become the Thron. At the same time, Focus is moving away from the old series designations and replacing them with a system based solely on model family and spec level: Thron 9, Thron 8, Thron 7 – plus the standalone Thron EQP family. The change will initially affect the entire e-MTB range for the 2027 model year, including the Sam and Jam. The rest of the Focus model range will follow in the 2028 model year.
The Thron 9 is the flagship of the Thron range and demonstrates what’s possible when you refuse to compromise on a touring e-MTB. The suspension setup features a Fox AWL HD Sport fork with 150 millimetres of travel, combined with a Fox Float Rhythm shock with 140 millimetres of travel at the rear.
Particularly worth noting: the Thron 9 is fitted with Magura Luise Elite ABS brakes, featuring four pistons and 203/203-millimetre rotors. ABS brakes on an e-MTB are still by no means standard and can offer a real safety benefit on varied terrain. The display is the Bosch Kiox 300, and the drivetrain is a mechanical 12-speed Shimano Deore. The wheelset consists of WTB STI30 rims with Shimano MT500 hubs, fitted with Maxxis Minion DHF tyres.
Price: 5,699 euros (720 Wh) / 5,999 euros (800 Wh)
The Thron 8 offers a well-balanced package for riders who want to ride at a high level without having to pay for the top-of-the-range model. The fork is from RockShox: however, with the Psylo Silver offering 150 millimetres of travel, you do have to put up with a heavy weight and only mediocre responsiveness. At the rear is a RockShox Deluxe Select shock absorber with 140 millimetres of travel. The display has been upgraded to the Bosch Purion 200, whilst the drivetrain comes from Shimano’s Deore range.
Price: 4,699 euros (720 Wh) / 4,999 euros (800 Wh)
You wouldn’t guess from the motor that the Thron 7 is the entry-level model in the range: it too is powered by the Bosch Performance Line CX – rather than the Performance Line or PX motors sometimes fitted in this price bracket. The suspension is provided by SR Suntour: an XCR 36 fork with 150 millimetres of travel at the front and an Edge XR R shock with 140 millimetres of travel at the rear certainly offer solid suspension. However, you shouldn’t expect particularly sensitive handling. The drivetrain has been upgraded to the 10-speed version of Shimano CUES, whilst the brakes are from Tektro: Gemini SL, four-piston, 203/203 millimetres. The display is the Bosch Purion 200.
Price: 3,699 euros (720 Wh) / 3,999 euros (800 Wh)
Alongside the classic Thron models, Focus is continuing the Thron EQP range for the 2027 model year. The EQP variants differ from the standard range in several respects and are aimed at riders who want their e-MTB to be particularly well-suited to everyday use and equipped for practicality. A USB-C port on the battery allows devices to be charged whilst on the move. The tyres are now Schwalbe Nobby Nic in 29 x 2.4 inches. The suspension package on both EQP models consists of an SR Suntour Zeron G fork (150 mm) and the Edge EVO R shock (140 mm).
The Thron 8 EQP is the top-of-the-range model in the EQP range: it comes with the Bosch Kiox 500 display, including a USB-C port, as well as Magura CT ABS brakes, four pistons, 203/203 millimetres, and a mechanical Deore 12-speed drivetrain. The price of the Thron 8 EQP is 5,499 euros (720 Wh) or 5,799 euros (800 Wh).
The Thron 7 EQP features the Bosch Purion 200 display, Shimano CUES in the 10-speed version and Shimano MT420 brakes – and also comes with a USB-C port and the same wheel and tyre setup as the 8 EQP. The price here is 4,699 euros (720 Wh) / 4,999 euros (800 Wh).
