The cosmos of children's mountain bikes is huge these days and yet is not the focus of every biker. So it may come as a surprise to many that lightweight construction specialist Stoll and "Made-in-Germany" cult brand Crossworx now also have their own children's bikes in their range. Another underdog is affordable yet lightweight: the Roko.bike from Poland. The bikes from Tiny Rock, which are brand new in Germany, are typically American, colourful and powerful. Of course, long-established names in the scene such as Scott, Canyon, Cube and Giant also have exciting new children's mountain bikes in their programme. We took a closer look at ten off-road speedsters for young bikers.
Young racers with cross-country ambitions get a high-end sports machine weighing just 8.1 kilos with the new children's hardtail from Stoll. In XC racing, lightweight bikes with an eight before the decimal point are now standard in the top youth classes. Until now, however, families have only been able to buy a few such lightweight options "off the peg". The equipment list of the Next Gen 29 Gold is a firework of high-end parts: Sram XX1, Shimano XTR, Bike Ahead carbon components. A dropper post from Bike-Yoke is available for an extra charge.
Crossworx enjoys a good reputation among German mountain bikers thanks to its high-quality aluminium frames "Made in Germany". The aluminium frame of the brand new trail hardtail for children, which weighs just 1400 grams, is welded in Thuringia and accommodates either rigid forks or suspension forks with 60 millimetres of travel. The 24-inch bike weighs a total of 10.4 kilos.
Affordably priced and weighing just nine kilos, the small trail hardtail from the Polish label is likely to arouse the interest of many families. 80 millimetres of suspension travel from an in-house fork, wide Kenda tyres and a ten-speed Microshift gear system should ensure off-road capability. BIKE already has a test bike in use and will be reporting on the riding characteristics shortly.
It has only been known for a few days that Giant is reorganising its STP series. In addition to cool dirt bikes, the line-up also includes functional mountain bike hardtails for children. The Giant STP 20 PS rolls on small 20-inch wheels, but already has a suspension fork if the youngsters want to go off-road. Even the smallest mountain bike from the Taiwanese company does not have to do without internally routed cables and wide studded tyres. Particularly interesting: the aluminium frame is made from 90 to 100 percent recycled materials.
The Cube Reaction 240 Pro weighs just nine kilos thanks to its lightweight aluminium frame and high-quality parts, such as the small 24-inch aluminium wheels from Newmen. The rigid carbon fork is both robust and light. The 2.1 inch wide Schwalbe tyres ensure fast rolling and the necessary cushioning. The cassette has 11 to 48 teeth and should get the Cube children's bike up almost any hill.
>> The Cube Phenix C:62 Rookie SLX carbon hardtail is also aimed at youth racers. We tested it here.
In the event that children want to ride the same equipment as XC superstar Nino Schurter, the Swiss have made provisions. The Mini-Spark rolls on 27.5-inch wheels, has 120 millimetres of front and rear suspension travel and weighs 12.5 kilos. Exciting features such as a shock hidden in the carbon frame, internal cable routing and the option to customise the steering angle via headset shells make the Scott Spark RC 700 a particularly exciting youth mountain bike.
The American brand has only recently become available in Germany. Despite its small 24-inch wheels, the carbon Fully already has 140 millimetres of suspension travel and is aimed at young enduro riders. The manufacturer promises weights from 11.8 kilos thanks to the lightweight carbon frame. A ten-speed drivetrain provides the drive and a massive Tektro brake system provides the deceleration.
The Spaniards are also targeting young enduro riders with the 24-inch bike. 120 millimetres of suspension travel, four-piston brakes, dropper post and twelve-speed gears are intended to pave the way for the 13.8-kilo aluminium full-suspension bike. The children's mountain bike relies on the same tried-and-tested rear suspension system as Mondraker's adult bikes.
With 160 millimetres of front and rear suspension travel and 27.5-inch wheels, the Propain Tyee YTH is ready for all enduro exploits. In addition to a Sram Eagle Transmission groupset, the aluminium frame is fitted with Rockshox suspension and grippy Schwalbe tyres on Newmen rims. The look can be customised in the online configurator. Propain does not provide any information on the weight.
The paintwork of the Canyon Neuron Young Hero children's mountain bike comes in the Fabio Wibmer style and should score particularly well with the youngsters. The 13.7-kilo fully rolls on 27.5-inch wheels in frame sizes XXS and XS. 130 millimetres of suspension travel and trail-ready equipment appeal to children and teenagers who want to venture into real mountain bike terrain. A Shimano gear system with 12 gears gets kids started on the trails.
