Fritzmeier subsidiary M1 Sporttechnik is pulling the ripcord after 14 years in the e-bike business. Managing Director Sebastian Scholz announced that the company will cease operations on 30 April 2026, according to the industry magazine Velobiz. Despite extensive stabilisation measures, the economic situation has deteriorated significantly, Scholz said. According to the brands GoreWear, Husqvarna, Scor and Gasgas, this is the next farewell from the bike industry (we reported in our collective article HERE). Also the Insolvency reports from Syntace and BMZ had recently caused a stir in the bicycle market.
The Upper Bavarian manufacturer M1 Sporttechnik entered the e-bike business in 2012 and positioned itself in the premium segment. Focussing on carbon frames and innovative technologies should set M1 Sporttechnik apart from the competition. Most recently, M1 had significantly revamped its e-MTB platform and put together a particularly versatile e-MTB centred around the Bosch Performance CX and Performance SX motors.
The Spitzing model presented in 2014 caused a stir in the industry as it was massive and extravagant. A short time later, the Bavarians made a name for themselves with the powerful TQ HPR 120 motor, which outshone other electric drives with its enormous power. A unique selling point for this evolutionary stage of the M1 Spitzing. The carbon e-bike attracted international attention with its exceptional riding data. However, this concentrated power could not secure the desired market success.
The difficult situation in the industry forced M1 Sporttechnik to take drastic measures. Despite intensive efforts, a sustained improvement in the business situation failed to materialise. The market situation became increasingly challenging for premium suppliers.
Last year, M1 Sporttechnik launched one last rescue attempt. Two young managing directors took over the reins and implemented an online configurator with a click & collect system. This digital sales strategy was intended to open up new customer groups.
The innovative sales approach was unable to solve the economic problems. The hoped-for increase in sales failed to materialise, so the management decided to discontinue operations. The Fritzmeier Group is thus withdrawing from the e-bike market.
According to the announcement, customers and retail partners do not need to worry about existing warranty claims. M1 Sporttechnik assures the continuation of services within the framework of the statutory provisions. Suitable solution structures are already being worked on.
The processing of warranty claims should remain guaranteed even after the cessation of operations. M1 Sporttechnik is developing appropriate concepts for the aftercare of the e-bikes sold. The details of the service continuation will be communicated promptly.
