The Specialized Epic 9, priced at 15,500 euros: What’s the story behind this limited-edition race full-suspension bike?

Specialized doesn’t have to look far for selling points for the Epic 9. This benchmark race full-suspension bike offers 120 millimetres of travel, an extremely lightweight carbon frame and a track record that is second to none. For the 2026 season, Specialised is now launching this special version S-Works Epic 9 Built for Legends LTD into the race. It features a special ‘victory red’ paint finish, black components and red anodised brake calipers as a striking detail.

Above all, however, every bike has its own unique number. Only 119 are produced at the factory. The exclusive XC Racer costs 15,500 euros. That’s it then.

Limited edition – that sums up the Epic 9. Specialised has tuned its latest XC full-suspension bike for performance more radically than ever before: the frame, including the shock, weighs just around 1,589 grams in size M, whilst the complete bike starts at 8.39 kilograms. Compared with the Epic 8, the Specialized Epic 9 saves around 206 grams on the frame alone – compared with its already lightweight predecessor, the Epic 8.

Specialized is putting all its eggs in one basket in 2026

Road, XC, Downhill and Gravel: in 2026, Specialized introduced a new top-of-the-range model to spearhead the range in each of its four major racing categories.

The Tarmac SL9 secured four stage wins at the Tour de France. At the Tour de France Femmes, Specialized claimed six victories across nine stages – including the overall victory for Demi Vollering and the green jersey for Lorena Wiebes.

Specialized also continued to build on its track record off-road. The Epic 9 has already claimed top honours four times in the Cross-Country World Cup – in XCO and XCC with Adrien Boichis, Sina Frei and Laura Stigger. In downhill, the Demo 11 secured four World Cup victories in a row. And at Unbound, the Crux 5 gravel bike made yet another big impression: in the men’s race, Specialized swept the podium, whilst in the women’s race they secured a one-two finish.

This is the stage for the Built for Legends Collection. Specialized has brought together its road, XC, downhill and gravel race bikes in a single special edition collection. The Epic 9 takes on the XC role – and is likely to be the most interesting model in the collection for many off-road enthusiasts.

119 bikes. No two are alike.

On the limited-edition Epic 9 models, Specialised applies a red colour coating over the silver base. Depending on the light, the surface shifts from a deep crimson to a bright, metallic red. Over this, a hand-applied black ink wash spreads across the frame like watercolour paint. Dark edges add extra depth.

And that is precisely what makes the LTD version so special: No two of the 119 bikes are alike. The hand-finished surface makes every frame a unique piece.

Added to this are black components and red brake callipers. The latter perhaps provide the boldest contrast in the entire range. Red has always been part of Specialized’s racing DNA and is regarded as the colour of victory.

The Epic 9: lighter, more aggressive

But special paintwork or not, the real spectacle lies beneath.

Specialized developed the Epic 9 as the successor to the Epic 8 and, at the same time, discontinued two separate models from its range: the Epic World Cup and the Epic Evo. Instead of three bikes, a single model is now designed to meet the varied demands of modern XC courses.

To this end, the developers asked a simple question: What slows a racer down?

The answer was consistent: weight, friction and a lack of reserves.

The new frame is around 206 grams lighter than the Epic 8. Among other things, Specialised has reduced the weight of the main frame, the main pivot bearing, the seat tube and the rear triangle. In the S-Works frame, high-quality carbon fibres in particular help to save weight.

At the same time, the Epic 9 retains its 120 millimetres of travel at the front and rear. Revised kinematics, greater anti-squat and 11 per cent less friction are designed to squeeze even more forward momentum out of every watt. That said, the suspension isn’t solely focused on maximum efficiency: the Epic 9 is designed to deliver the same level of control on modern, technical World Cup courses as it does in long marathon races.

Built for Legends – Marketing or genuine racing DNA?

Of course, with a special edition like this, one might well ask: just how much of the legend lies in the paintwork? The honest answer is: the paintwork doesn’t win any races. The Epic 9 underneath, however, certainly does.

The Epic boasts more than two decades of racing history. Specialized developed the new generation in collaboration with its XC riders and systematically refined the design to meet the demands of modern World Cup courses. It is, quite simply, one of the fastest mountain bikes in the world.

The ‘Built for Legends’ edition therefore focuses less on technical exclusivity and more on evoking a sense of emotion. Specialized takes a race bike that is already uncompromising, gives it an elaborate finish, numbers each model and turns it into a collector’s item.

All in all, the S-Works Epic 9 Built for Legends LTD is exactly what a special edition like this should be: technically uncompromising, visually striking and available in limited numbers. 119 pieces. 15,500 euros. A season full of victories. And die-hard fans can secure a piece of this legend with a unique, one-of-a-kind item.
