The DJI Avinox motor has quickly secured a significant market share in the e-mountainbike sector. Now the slim, performance-orientated drive from China is also focusing on the gravel bike segment. Does the Velduro Phantom E-Gravel position itself as a pioneer of a new wave of development and as a potential catalyst for broader market adoption?

Maximum power in a compact and lightweight motor: with these values, the DJI Avinox M1 motor has shaken up the established e-bike world. No other e-drive has ever been so powerful, yet so small and light, This is also shown by our current test of the Avinox M1 in the laboratory and in practice. The new motor has secured a massive market share on e-mountainbikes in a very short space of time. The New Zealand brand Velduro has fully focussed on e-bikes with the DJI motor - and is now also showing an e-gravel bike with the powerhouse.

The Phantom comes in three versions or is also available as a frame set for customised self-assembly. In addition to two different versions with racing handlebars, there is also a commuter model with a flat bar. The frame and fork are always made of carbon. The 600-cell battery of the Avinox system is integrated in the down tube - the smaller battery. The complete bikes start at 5299 euros, the frameset is available for 3999 euros. With the Rogue Velduro also has an E-Enduro mountain bike with DJI Avinox and high-pivot rear suspension in its programme.

DJI Avinox on a gravel bike

For a power motor, the DJI Avinox M1 is surprisingly compact and light, which also makes it interesting for gravel bikes. However, light motors such as a Bosch Performance SX, TQ HPR 60 or HPR 40 or a Fazua Ride 60 tend to be used in this segment. These are even slimmer and in some cases over 500 grams lighter.

However, these units are nowhere near the blatant power of the Avinox. On a gravel bike, however, this should be a much less important argument than on an E-MTB. In our tests, the Avinox motor also had a slightly higher pedalling resistance (without motor assistance). This small disadvantage has more influence on gravel bikes than on mountain bikes.
