Since 2020, mail-order company Rose has been sending its all-mountain bike onto the trails unchanged. The Root Miller has the slackest seat angle and the lowest stack value in the test. Together with the short reach and the stubby stem, you sit squat. Be careful when choosing the size: The seatpost cannot be lowered completely and can only be extended to a limited extent due to the short factory-fitted cable.
When climbing, the long chainstays help to prevent the front end from rearing up. Even when seated, the rear end of the Rose bobs noticeably. The shock platform has to be switched on for lively acceleration. The fact that the Root Miller is around a kilo lighter than the other bikes in its price class, which is evident on steep ramps. On the way to the summit, you need less power than with the Canyon Spectral AL 6, YT Jeffsy Core 3 or Focus Jam 6.9.
On the trail, the Rose proves to be a comfortable descender. The rear suspension quickly releases a lot of travel and is lower in its travel than the Canyon or Specialised. Unfortunately, the rear end filters small bumps out of the terrain worse than the competition. On very rough, steep descents, the rear end is quickly levered out and feels slightly overwhelmed. On jumps and in berms, a lot of energy is lost in the mid-travel range.
On fast downhills, the long rear end helps you stay in line despite the short reach. However, the Root Miller doesn't come close to the smoothness of the Canyon or the YT. In tight corners, the bike needs to be ridden with vigour. However, active riders will miss some playfulness due to the soft suspension. The price for the good equipment package with Shimano SLX/XT mix and Rockshox Select+ suspension is high. The Rose Root Miller 2 in the final test even cost 200 euros more.
The Rose Root Miller offers the comfortable characteristics of a conservative all-mountain bike without excelling in any one area. The price-performance ratio is convincing. - Jan Timmermann, BIKE tester
