The new Focus Jam² relies on Shimano's EP8 motor, which is powered by a specially developed 720 battery.

As with the Canyon, the battery is pushed into the closed down tube from below. However, Focus doesn't seem to have gained a weight advantage here, as the aluminium bike is one of the heaviest in the test, despite only having an averagely solid spec with a thin fork and thin tyre carcass.

The seating position is balanced and comfortable. As soon as you get on the bike, you notice the high level of riding comfort, which is due in particular to the sensitive suspension. The rear remains fully active even under chain tension, giving you plenty of traction on climbs. Extreme steep sections are not the Jam²'s speciality, as the rear suspension of the bike is short. But all in all, the bike climbs very well, thanks to its central position on the bike.

On rough descents, the plush rear triumphs. It works very sensitively, generates a lot of traction and still doesn't get rattled by rough bumps. Even if the narrow Rockshox 35 can't quite keep up, the Jam² handles rocks and roots with ease. The bike pulls willingly around corners and is also easy to pull onto the rear wheel. Nevertheless, it doesn't feel really light-footed and agile. The high weight and the rather high centre of gravity have a negative effect here. Good: The permissible system weight is 150 kilos, a rarity on the market. The noise level on the Focus is also positive. It is one of the quietest bikes in the test, the engine rattling is discreet.

Conclusion by Florentin Vesenbeckh, deputy editor-in-chief of EMTB:

The Jam² 7.8 is a powerful touring bike with plenty of comfort and great range. Potent and easy to control, but a little sluggish. Unfortunately quite heavy.
