The 27.5-inch shaft has Giantas one of the largest bicycle manufacturers in the world. Be it the hardtail XTC, the all-mountain Trance or the Reign Enduro. All of these bikes rolled on 27.5 inch wheels for at least one model cycle. However, the smaller 650B wheels are gradually disappearing from the product ranges of MTB manufacturers. Even in Giant's MTB line, 27.5-inch mountain bikes are becoming increasingly rare. The Trance in 27.5 inch with 150/140 millimetres of travel will no longer be available in 2021. Instead, the specialist retail brand is expanding its popular 29-inch Trance platform with an X version. The addition X has a long tradition at Giant and stands for "extra travel, extra riding fun". For the new Trance X 29, this means 150 millimetres of travel on the fork and 135 millimetres of travel on the Maestro rear triangle. In addition, Giant has given the new all-mountain a flipchip with which you can fine-tune geometry parameters such as steering angle, seat angle, chainstay length and bottom bracket height.
Compared to the classic Trance 29which is a trail bike according to the suspension travel, the Trance X belongs to the all-mountain category. In addition, the new carbon rocker has a flip chip that can be used to flatten the head angle from 66.2 to 65.5 degrees and lower the bottom bracket by ten millimetres. In addition, the seat angle changes from the "Low" to the "High" setting (77.2 to 77.9 degrees) and the chainstays and wheelbase increase minimally. Also striking in comparison to its little brother Trance 29The reach increases to 486 mm in size L, the seat angle steepens to over 77 degrees and the components are trimmed even more for downhill riding and rough terrain. For example, four of the six models feature a Fox 36, the four-piston brakes cling to 200 mm brake discs at the front and the 2.5 inch wide front tyres sit on 30 millimetre wide rims. This means that the X version may be heavier than the Trance 29, but it doesn't have to hide from true enduro bikes on the descents.
With the three carbon models (Advanced Pro), the carbon fibre chassis in size M should only weigh 2100 grams. The top model for 8000 euros with Fox Live Valve, carbon wheels and Shimano XTR/XT mix weighed 13.68 kilos without pedals in the BIKE test lab (size L). The aluminium frame is said to be 750 grams heavier. In addition to the factory tubeless setup, all Trance X models benefit from new protectors on the chainstay and down tube. The first Trance X models should be in shops at Giant dealers from now on. You can read the first detailed lab and practical test of the Giant Trance X Advanced Pro in BIKE 12/20!
