In Italy, travellers still have to attach warning signs to their cars when transporting bicycles. An amendment to the law planned for January 2025, which would have made it easier for bicycle carriers on towbars, was not implemented. The labelling requirement for warning signs continues to apply to all loads that protrude to the rear. Violations can result in fines of 87 euros or more and a ban on continuing the journey.

If you are travelling to Italy by bike, you must comply with Italian regulations on load securing when transporting it by car. The legal situation has changed several times in recent months, causing confusion. It is now clear that the warning sign requirement remains in place.

In Italy, any load extending beyond the rear of the vehicle must be labelled with a Warning sign must be labelled. If the overhanging load takes up the entire width of the vehicle, two warning signs are required. These must be attached to the left and right at the side end of the load.

No exceptions for warning plates for coupling carriers

Rear carriers mounted on the trailer coupling are also subject to the labelling requirement. This applies even if the carrier has a repeat licence plate and its own lighting. An amendment to the law in January 2025 and a circular from the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport had initially promised relief. However, the planned exemption for appropriately equipped rear carriers was not implemented.

The ADAC recommends that all motorists taking their bicycles to Italy display warning signs when transporting them. Fines can be issued if the labelling is missing.

Technical requirements and penalties

The warning sign must be made of sheet metal and have a minimum size of 50 x 50 centimetres. It is labelled with five red and white stripes >> e.g. available here. Violations of the labelling requirement are punishable by a fine of at least 87 euros. The Italian authorities may prohibit you from continuing your journey if the warning plates are missing.
