Madonna di Campiglio will have a lot to say to skiers of the older generation. The home town of slalom legend Alberto Tomba "La Bomba" focuses on class rather than quantity and, as an upmarket ski resort, can be mentioned in the same breath as St. Moritz and Cortina d'Ampezzo. For years, the Ferrari Formula 1 team and the Ducati Moto GP crew also came here for the "Wrooom" event, where they engaged in wild car races on the frozen lake in the town centre.
Mountain bikers are particularly familiar with Madonna di Campiglio in connection with the Transalp. Every year, hundreds of Transalp riders on the Albrecht route are likely to make this their last stop before reaching Lake Garda. For mountain bikers, the town itself has mainly positioned itself as a transit station over the years. For a long time, the tour options seemed to be limited to the multi-day Dolomiti Brenta Bike tour (see Stage tours in Trentino). This is slowly beginning to change.
In fact, the variety of tours around Madonna di Campiglio and the neighbouring Val Rendena is immense and far too rewarding to be covered just in passing. Nestled between the Brenta Dolomites in the east and the glaciated Adamello and Presanella mountain groups, there are many high valleys and hidden places waiting to be discovered by mountain bikers.
Many high alpine destinations in the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park also suggest a tour combination of bike & hike. You don't have to go as wild as the bike mountaineer Harald Philipp, whose death-defying descents along the via ferratas of the Brenta Group are making viral waves on Facebook. Those who like things a little tamer will find a beautiful area near Pinzolo. The first freeride line was opened here in 2015 and two more lines will be added this summer. This will round off the possibilities in this region, and construction work has already begun!
Trentino Tour 05: Giro delle Marmotte
Tour data and tour rating
Starting point
Spinale Express cable car in Madonna di Campiglio
Route
After the cable car ride and a descent over gravel, the first ascent to the Rifugio Boch serves as a warm-up. From here, a combination of forest paths and very beautiful single trails (CAI 967) leads down a good 1200 metres into the Val di Sole. The difficulties are only briefly in the S2 range; the trails are mostly very flowy. After gaining altitude again by cable car from Commezzadura, forest tracks and trails lead back to Madonna di Campiglio.
Highlights
Magnificent views of the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello and Presanella group. Super trail below the Rifugio Solander!
Retreat
Various bars and cafés in Commezzadura and the Rifugios Solander and Rosalpina on tour

Trentino Tour 06: Cavrados Trail
Tour data and tour rating
Starting point
Pra Rodont cable car near Pinzolo
Route
After the ascent by cable car and chairlift to the Rifugio Pra Rodont, it's practically all downhill. But first you have to enjoy the stunning 360-degree panorama from the highest point of the tour. The descent begins on an easy alpine path. From Malga Gruai, the fun begins: the path (CAI 969) starts very smoothly, only in the middle section does the terrain become steeper and more difficult (S2). After this short key section, however, the rest of the trail descent can be fully enjoyed. Once you reach Maso Pin, follow the old valley road back to Pinzolo via a few hairpin bends.
Highlights
Great panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges
Retreat
Compulsory at Rifugio Pra Rodont
