It doesn't have to be as crazy as the gold-plated Allen keys from professional mechanic Yanick Gyger. The Swiss rider was the trusted mechanic of super racer Nino Schurter for a long time and has a penchant for fancy tools, as he revealed to us in an interview some time ago. How useful a set of Allen keys with 24-carat gold glaze really is remains to be seen.
The fact is, however, that there are numerous smart and clever tools on the market that sweeten the daily workshop routine for hobby mechanics, but which you wouldn't normally be able to afford. But: Christmas, a milestone birthday or perhaps a special event for which you want to get your bike in shape - there are always opportunities to treat yourself to something. And then these tools should definitely be on your list:
The tools from the tool manufacturer Abbey are never just functional parts, but always something for the eye as well. You can use it to loosen the cassette from the freewheel - it could do with some grease. The long steel handle sits comfortably in the hand and offers a large lever. The Crombie Tool also opens the locking ring of centre lock discs. Also available with a super-light hollow handle. Price: 80 Euro >> available here.
Few things are more annoying than rattling gears. But the perfect gear set-up is often fiddly work. This is no longer the case with the line faithful from the Black Forest tuning company: the stops of the rear derailleur can be precisely adjusted using a precision laser. The Linientreu is also a feast for the eyes - elegantly milled and brightly anodised. Price: 220 Euro >> available here.
Dentists use such hooks and picks to pick the parsley out of the spaces between your teeth. But you can also do all sorts of things with them on your bike. Plucking dirt out of hard-to-reach corners, fishing cables out of the frame or removing seals and O-rings - and we can think of countless other uses for the pick-up set. Price: 53 Euro >> available here.
Whoever says quality tools must also say Wera - the German manufacturer has already proven this in the BIKE test. The Safe-Torque measures between 2 and 12 Nm ultra-precisely and thus protects expensive bike components. The high-quality torque spanner also feels great in the hand. An over-slip mechanism prevents over-tightening. The spanner works with right-hand or left-hand tightening and as a standard ratchet. Price: 269 Euro >> available here.
These are no ordinary T spanners, but small works of art. The silver pieces made from robust S2 tool steel have some really clever features: sliding handles for more leverage, bevelled tips for easier application and a twisted hexagon - the strip gripper - for loosening round screws. Also available as a Torx set, of course. Price: 248 Euro >> available here.
The derailleur hanger is really sensitive. Just touch a stone and the derailleur rattles like an old cogwheel railway. That's why we love direct mount derailleurs. If you don't have one, you should definitely get this alignment tool. It allows the derailleur hanger to be precisely aligned, and the gears shift again like in a Ferrari F1. Price: 215 Euro >> available here.
Another clever tool from Abbey: This small throwing star can be equipped with four bits for the most important screws on the bike and is extremely practical for quick adjustments to the cockpit and other parts. Its cross shape fits particularly well in the hand, and its compact design means it even fits in your trouser pocket when travelling. Price: 63 Euro >> available here.
Our favourite repair stand is finally available at an affordable price! The sturdy tripod, practical quick-release fastener and integrated tray make it particularly attractive. Only the materials are slightly inferior to the much more expensive Pro version. However, at 5.6 kilos, the Sport Mechanic is really light and still lifts bikes weighing up to 30 kilos as easily as Arnie used to lift a dumbbell. Price: 225 Euro >> available here.
It's hard to believe, but twisted screw heads are one of the most common defects on bicycles. It is therefore worth investing in high-quality Torx and hexagon socket spanners. The Silca set is made from Swiss tool steel, which is 18 per cent stronger than ordinary steel, is hardened nine times and has a non-slip coating. The best thing about it: thanks to the practical holder, the set is ideal for travelling. Price: 100 Euro >> available here.
Changing internally routed cables is as difficult as threading a string through an embroidery needle - you could despair. Topeak offers a practical solution for challenging cable routing: magnetic guides and various fittings help to pull shift, brake and dropper post cables through the frame - without any nervous fluttering. Price: 50 Euro >> available here.
Unlike most of us, the Travel Keeper likes to be just a placeholder and protects the frame from transport damage when the rear wheel is removed. Its stable aluminium construction can be adjusted to all common axle standards and also maintains the shifting function and chain tension. Price: 81 Euro
A bearing service is a wellness weekend for your pedals and wheels. But simply clamping the threads or axle adapters in a vice to remove them? Please don't! These magnetic clamping jaws clamp the threads securely without damaging them and fit all common diameters. Price: 45 Euro
It is the 500 magnum among chain rivets - inconspicuous, powerful and precise. The Rohloff Revolver 3 is the absolute professional when it comes to opening your chains and cracks everything from single-speed to twelve-speed drivetrains. Its shaft handle sits securely in the hand, and thanks to hardened materials, the Revolver 3 won't break down even in continuous operation. Price: 165 Euro >> available here.
Of course, you can build your own press-fit tool from a threaded rod and a few washers - but precision is essential when changing bearings. Friction, wear and corrosion: incorrectly pressed-in bearings cause a whole host of problems. With the precision tool from Enduro Bearings, bearings of almost all sizes can be meticulously installed. Price: 299 Euro
