The aim of our joint project with the industry was to create a mountain bike that is as sustainable as possible, which is not only as durable as possible according to the cradle-to-cradle principle, but also consists of as many recycled or at least recyclable materials as possible. We now present the exclusive result in BIKE 1/22: bike PROJECT: ride green. It all started with Syntace with high-quality wheels, handlebars, stem and seat post made of aluminium, followed by Bio-lubricant specialist Danico-Biotechwhich will provide all the oils and greases for our project bike - 100 per cent plant-based and biodegradable. The brakes on the project bike are precision-manufactured and extremely durable. Trickstuff stoppers made in Freiburgwhose spare parts supply is guaranteed for years to come. Tyres and tubes come from Schwalbewhich has been improving its own environmental footprint for almost a decade with its award-winning hose recycling programme. In order to minimise the ecological footprint of the gearshift assembly Sram combines particularly durable shifting components into one groupset and supplemented with specially produced prototypes. The final piece of the puzzle was Canyon a 3D-printed aluminium frame which serves as an idea carrier for the development of a sustainable mountain bike. This frame weighs around two kilos. In a further development stage, a weight reduction of one kilo would probably be possible.
