In addition to the Road races and the track cycling competitions at the European Championships 2022 European Championship medals will also be awarded to mountain bikers in Munich. Cross-country bikers were rewarded with medals for the first time at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow. Back then, Lars Forster and Jolanda Neff won the two international titles for Switzerland. Both will also be at the start in Munich.
The cross-country races take place in Munich's Olympic Park. It goes up and down along the Olympic lake and over the Olympic mountain in mass start format. The circuit is 4.27 kilometres long. The course designers from Trailworks have come up with some great ideas and modelled rock gardens, bridges and drops into the hills of the Olympic Park. The riders also cross the Olympic Lake on a bridge installed especially for the event. The sections of the course have such illustrious names as "From Roots to Roofs" or "Munich Mamba". Entry to both mountain bike races of the European Championships is free of charge.
According to the organisers, a total of 115 athletes from 23 nations will be competing in the two MTB races in Munich. World champion Nino Schurter will be missing, but Mathias Flückiger (SUI) is back in shape after recovering from his coronavirus infection and will start. The British Tour de France stage winner and Cyclocross world champion Tom Pidcock is on the start list for the European Championships. Other favourites in the men's race: Titouan Carod (FRA), Luca Braidot (ITA) and Filippo Colombo (SUI). In the women's race, stars such as Jolanda Neff (SUI), Anne Terpstra (NED), Mona Mitterwallner (AUT) and Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (FRA) are on the start list for the European Championships race in Munich. Luca Schwarzbauer, Max Brandl and Georg Egger will be competing for Germany in the men's race. Cape Epic winner Egger finished ninth at the European Championships in Glasgow four years ago, Elisabeth Brandau fifth.
