After 30 years: Shimano launches the first major update for the tried-and-tested SPD-Cleat system
SPD cleats have been the undisputed market leader for three decades - in unchanged form. Now Shimano is bringing a significant update to its proven clipless pedal technology. The new cleats offer more freedom when getting on, which should help in tough terrain as well as when learning to ride clipless pedals. They are fully compatible with all existing Shimano SPD systems.

A new milestone in pedal technology?

We have seen wheel sizes come and suspension systems go, and many an innovation in mountain biking has turned out to be a pipe dream after a short time. But there is one product that has remained unchanged since its invention almost 30 years ago and is still the best of its kind. We are talking about Shimano's SPD cleats. Since the introduction of the SM-SH51 cleat in 1995, the system has become the trusted standard for millions of cyclists worldwide.

Now the Japanese company is unveiling the CL-MT001, the first major update to its SPD cleats in almost three decades. With the progress in pedal and shoe technologies and the changing requirements of users, Shimano has now taken the opportunity to fundamentally rethink the interface between pedal and cleat.

The result is the CL-MT001, a cleat designed to combine the renowned reliability of the SPD system with versatility and improved user-friendliness. The new cleats have been developed for a wide range of riders - from modern trail and enduro racers to everyday commuters and newcomers who are just learning how to click on and off.

Multi-entry functionality for more intuitive boarding

The key difference to the previous system lies in the multi-entry functionality. While the original SH51-Cleat requires an entry that requires the tip to be inserted first, the CL-MT001 allows riders to activate the pedal in multiple ways. This means you can clip in using the traditional method - front first, then rear - but also the other way round - rear first, then front or simply pedalling straight down from the top.

This extended entry window offers advantages for a wide range of rider types. Enduro riders will appreciate the quick re-engagement, which is crucial after descents or foot contact in technical terrain. For cyclocross and gravel racers, it means faster remounting and the ability to get back on the pedals quickly. Newcomers should get used to the significantly simplified click-in process more quickly.

Backwards compatibility as a central design element

A key advantage of the new CL-MT001 cleat is its full backwards compatibility with all existing Shimano SPD pedal and shoe systems. This should allow all riders to benefit from improved performance and versatility without having to replace their current setup. Compatibility with the existing ecosystem ensures that the transition to the new cleats is seamless and requires no additional investment in new pedals or shoes.
