Shimano completes its XTR range with the new PD-M9220 pedals, which have been specially developed for enduro and technically demanding trails. The SPD pedals are aimed at riders who are travelling on technically challenging trails and require maximum control. Of course, the new XTR pedals are also compatible with the just introduced and revised SPD cleats compatible, which now offer extended options for getting started with the pedal.

A key feature of the new XTR PD-M9220 pedals is the wide contact surface, which according to Shimano should improve pedalling performance. The larger contact surface between shoe and pedal should ensure that no energy is wasted when pedalling uphill. Power is transmitted over a larger surface area, which can be particularly advantageous on longer climbs. A raised pedal platform in combination with four adjustable traction pins is intended to provide more stability, safety and control. The pins provide additional grip, especially when the rider is not clipped in - an important safety aspect in technically demanding passages where quick clipping in and out may be necessary. The raised platform also provides better ground clearance, which can reduce the risk of bouncing in bends or over obstacles.
For use in rough terrain, Shimano has equipped the PD-M9220 pedals with a robust outer cage to protect the binding mechanism from contact with stones and other obstacles. The design is specifically geared towards the requirements of enduro riding, where pedals often come into contact with stones, roots and other objects. In addition, the pedals have an improved seal design. These seals are designed to prevent dirt, water and other contaminants from penetrating the inside of the pedal and damaging the bearings.
