After months of intensive downhill and trail use, the flat pedal classic Five Ten Impact Pro continues to set the standard in terms of grip, durability and protection.

Topics in this article

It is the armour among flat pedal shoes, notorious for years for its brutal grip and indestructible construction. Now, after a long-term test between alpine scree fields and mud battles in the bike park, one thing is certain: the Impact Pro is still at the top of its game.

Sophisticated design for mountain bikers

With the Impact Pro, you immediately realise that this shoe is built to last. The synthetic upper material hardly absorbs any water, dries quickly and keeps its shape even after nasty mud battles. A reinforced toe box with Poron XRD cushioning protects the foot from stones and pedal impacts. The PU midsole absorbs impacts and can withstand a whole season of hard landings without becoming spongy. Underneath, Stealth S1 rubber with a modified profile ensures maximum pedal bite and more grip when running - large and small circles in the centre of the foot, raised semi-circles at the front. Small but clever details round off the package: an elasticated lace holder to prevent chain contact and a stable pull-on aid on the heel. All in all, this is a shoe in which no component has been left to chance - uncompromisingly trimmed for durability, protection and grip.

Test of the Five Ten Impact Pro MTB shoe

The Impact Pro MTB shoe has blossomed into the reference flat pedal shoe for gravity use since its introduction around eight years ago. After my endurance test, I know that its reputation is well deserved. The PU midsole absorbs landings that would break the back of other models. The fat padded upper and the stiff upper material provide extremely good grip, and the Stealth S1 rubber sticks to the pedal like superglue - whether in summer dust, autumn mud or sleet. In short: with the Impact Pro, you're set in concrete on the pedals.

The synthetic upper material hardly absorbs any water, dries quickly and defies any signs of wear even after a year of continuous use. There are no frayed seams and the fit is as solid as on the first day. The only drawback: on hot summer days, it quickly gets warm in the shoes.

I prefer pedals with long, thin and sharp-edged pins - heavy sole wear is inevitable. After a year, the profile of the Impact Pro starts to crumble in the problem areas. But not so bad: with this wear pattern, the Five Ten is one of the models that defy the pins the longest.

My conclusion

After months of constant use - from dusty summer trails to muddy winter rides - the Five Ten Impact Pro has offered my feet far more than just protection. With its bombproof fit and excellent grip, it has given me maximum confidence. Yes, it's not a lightweight, and at 30 degrees in the shade you want a little more ventilation. But every time it gets steep, rocky or simply wild, I'm glad that this is the shoe that sticks to my feet.
