The protective clothing specialist D3O and the bike manufacturer Specialized present the Traction D3O Kneepad, a new knee pad for mountain bikers. According to the manufacturer, the product was developed over four years in collaboration between D3O and Specialized. The promise is full-bodied: Effective impact protection should come together with unrestricted freedom of movement when pedalling.
When developing the Traction D3O knee pad, Specialized explains that the manufacturer's Body Geometry team used X-ray technology to precisely analyse knee movement during the pedalling cycle. Based on these findings, a new pad shape was created that is designed to adapt to the natural movements and changes in direction of the knee. The open grid structure of the pad is also designed to improve breathability and ventilation.
Despite its pedalling-friendly design, the Traction D3O knee pad is designed to meet EN1621-1 Level 1 certification. This is Specialized's way of proving that high protection does not necessarily have to come at the expense of comfort. Specialized also promises an ideal fit, which should prevent the pads from shifting or slipping during the ride.
One of the key features of the Traction D3O is the specially developed D3O pad with Impact Print technology, which is designed to flex naturally with the movement of the knee. The long slip-on sock is made from a four-way stretch fabric that is designed to wick away moisture and provide a comfortable climate. The abrasion-resistant front is designed to guarantee full durability and long-lasting protection on demanding trails. An elasticated cuff with a silicone band at the top is designed to provide a secure but comfortable fit. The back is seamless, which should prevent creasing and bunching behind the knee.
Adam Turvey, lead designer at D3O, emphasised the synergy of the collaboration: "This collaboration combines Specialized's deep understanding of rider biomechanics with D3O's expertise in material science and protection. The result is a knee pad that not only protects, but also supports and improves pedalling so that mountain bikers can ride more comfortably and confidently." So much for the full-bodied marketing promises. We are already looking forward to a field test in which we will try out the pads in detail in practical use.
The Traction D3O knee pad was designed for trail and enduro riders and is intended to be so comfortable that riders can wear it all the time, even on long tours. The product will be available immediately from selected dealers and on the Specialized website at a recommended retail price of 130 euros.
