​Santini Aero Race Jersey review: An aero jersey made from CO₂-recycled yarn

During the test ride with the the new Cube Litening Aero The jersey was worn for the first time. Next to the zip, on the inside of the jersey, is a print explaining what makes the fabric different: the carbon comes from captured steelworks emissions, is processed into polyester yarn and knitted into fabric. According to the manufacturer, the material saves 66 per cent of its own weight in CO₂ compared to a product made from virgin polyester fibre. The tester doesn’t notice that it’s a unisex cut when putting it on. Size S fits well; she wears this size with many other brands too. Compared to MAAP or Pas Normal Studios, the Aero Race runs slightly larger.

First things first

The Santini Aero Race Jersey costs 160 euros. The fabric is not standard polyester: according to the manufacturer, it is made from CO₂ emissions from the steel industry. The CO₂ is captured, chemically converted into polyester yarn and then knitted into fabric. According to the manufacturer, the material saves 66 per cent of its own weight in CO₂ compared to a product made from virgin polyester fibre. In our test, the unisex cut (XXS to 4XL) worked well without any noticeable compromises on fit; only the sleeves were rather long for our 1.60-metre-tall tester. Downsides: no zipped pocket.

Unisex fit and aerodynamics

Tested on various summer rides along different routes, it became clear that the Aero Race fits snugly without being too tight. The tester found that it tended to flap at the upper back, which was only noticeable in photos, not whilst riding. Choosing one size smaller might prevent this.

The front and back panels are made from Polartec fabric, whilst the shoulders and sleeves are made from a separate, aerodynamically structured fabric. Its ribbed construction is designed to reduce air resistance by creating vortices. Santini has tested this in a wind tunnel. This effect cannot be measured during the summer test rides.

The laser-cut cuffs on the sleeves are comfortable, and the silicone strip stays securely in place. The jersey fits snugly. At a height of 1.60 m, the sleeves are a little long. Silicone nubs on the bottom hem prevent it from riding up.

What else is going on?

If you prefer subtle brand logos, you’ve come to the right place: Santini is featured in small lettering on the chest, sleeve and back. No oversized logos here. The three rear pockets are reinforced at the top and are easy to reach whilst cycling; there are reflectors to the left and right of them. There is no zipped pocket for keys or a map. The front zip is easy to grip and fastens securely. The jersey doesn’t have a zip guard, but there’s no scratching or discomfort.

160 euros is at the upper end of the price range. Compared with other aero jerseys in this price bracket, it is the fabric in particular that justifies the price, rather than the features. The longer and more often you wear the jersey, the better its actual environmental footprint becomes.

The Aero Race Jersey is ideal for ambitious cyclists who are prepared to spend 160 euros on an aero jersey. The unisex cut makes it a straightforward choice, moving beyond traditional women’s or men’s cuts. Less suitable for those who rely on a zipped pocket.
