The Fiandre Shift Jacket is designed as a lightweight weatherproof jacket for temperatures between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius. Sportful uses the Polartec AirCore membrane, which is designed to reliably block out cold draughts whilst wicking excess moisture away from the body.
This weatherproof jersey is designed for mountain bikers who hit the trails even when the weather forecast is uncertain, but who don’t want to ride in a heavy winter or rain jacket all the time. The water-repellent construction protects against splashes and brief showers, but is no substitute for a full-fledged hardshell in continuous rain.
The Fiandre Shift Jacket’s greatest strength lies in its protection against the elements. With a top score of 1.0, it ranks amongst the best models in the entire comparison.
The jacket really comes into its own, particularly in a cool headwind and changing conditions. The membrane provides effective protection against the cold without unduly restricting breathability. This balance ensures a high level of comfort, particularly on rides featuring long climbs followed by descents.
Weighing just 225 grams in size L, the Sportful is one of the lightest jackets in the test. Only the Q36.5 Rain Shell Aero Jersey is even lighter.
The score of 1.5 for weight and pack size highlights the successful balance between weather protection and low weight. Sporty mountain bikers in particular benefit from this, as the jacket takes up hardly any space in a rucksack or can be worn continuously on long rides.
The Fiandre Shift Jacket scores an impressive 1.3 for fit and comfort. It has a regular fit and covers a wide range of sizes, from S to 3XL.
The cut is comfortably close-fitting without being overly race-oriented. This leaves plenty of room for functional base layers or a thin long-sleeved jersey. At the same time, the jacket offers enough freedom of movement for technical trails and longer rides.
Features include a stretch waistband, a covered front zip and a two-way zip. The latter makes it easier to regulate body temperature, particularly during long climbs or intense exertion.
The secure back pockets are particularly practical; Sportful has designed them specifically for rougher rides. This means that tools, snacks or your smartphone remain safely stowed away, even on bumpy trails. In terms of features and functionality, the jacket scores 2.0.
One positive aspect is the wide range of colours available. As well as classic dark shades, Sportful also offers more eye-catching colours, which can make you more visible in poor visibility conditions.
The reflective elements are less impressive. They are used sparingly and are among the jacket’s few weaknesses. Anyone who regularly cycles at dusk or on their commute should therefore wear additional reflective accessories or carry lights.
