AirCage construction and ventilation architecture

The 4D cooling system of the new Specialized Ambush 3 helmet works with four components. A widened "MouthPort" is designed to draw in cool air when climbing. Logical when orientated in the direction of travel: the air flow runs through the helmet from front to back. Longitudinal channels and deep internal channels promise to accelerate the movement of air inside the helmet. Rear outlets are designed to dissipate heat quickly without creating additional volume. Specialized claims to have spent over 100 hours testing every airflow path and impact channel in the development of the Ambush 3. Specialized confidently calls the Ambush 3 the brand's best ventilated trail helmet.

BOA Fit System and Mips Air Node

The BOA Fit System with "FS1" technology promises a micro-adjustable fit in 360 degrees. The system should remain stable even on rough terrain and hold the Specialized Ambush 3 securely on the head. The revised mould works together with the "Mips Air Node System". The "TriFix" strap system is designed to minimise clutter and pressure points. The compact shell sits closer to the head than on previous models. Specialised has redesigned the yoke and headband so that the helmet remains comfortable even when riding for several hours.

Visor and accessory integration

According to Specialized, the Ambush 3 is designed for trail riders looking for maximum ventilation. It also promises cross-country and down-country riders a compact, balanced fit. The revised visor can be adjusted in four directions and breaks off on impact. Mounts for cameras and lights are integrated. Trail riders can therefore attach equipment directly to the helmet. The integration should work without rattling or additional attachments. There is a hidden storage compartment for sunglasses. The helmet can be opened and closed using a Fidlock magnetic fastener.

Weight and safety assessment

According to Specialized, the helmet weighs 380 g in size medium in accordance with CPSC and CE standards. The renowned Virginia Tech test laboratory awarded the new Specialized Ambush 3 a full five stars in the safety rating at its market launch. The Mips Air Node System is said to help with impact protection, while the compact shell and the Mips system offer safety on technical terrain.

Conclusion

Mountain bikers need to keep a cool head in hot trail situations. I myself am a big fan of long tours with a high proportion of singletrack and appreciate a safe yet well-ventilated helmet. Our tests will have to show whether the revised Specialized Ambush 3 can live up to its high promises. Visually, I like the new Ambush even better than its predecessor. - Jan Timmermann, BIKE editor
