Top-tube bags have now become part of the essential kit for many bikepackers. They offer quick access to energy bars, smartphones or power banks without having to get off the bike. With the new Expedition Long Top Tube Pack, Apidura is expanding its waterproof bikepacking range to include a model that offers significantly more storage space than traditional top tube bags.

Whilst compact top-tube bags are often used to complement frame, saddle or handlebar bags, Apidura has taken a slightly different approach with this new model. The bag is aimed both at long-distance bike packers with extensive gear set-ups and at minimalists who want to fit as much storage space as possible centrally on the bike for long day rides.

Two litres of storage space right under your nose

With a capacity of two litres, the new bag is significantly larger than traditional top-tube models. It therefore offers plenty of space for snacks, tools, batteries, chargers or toiletries. This extra, easily accessible storage space can be particularly valuable on multi-day gravel or bikepacking tours.

Interesting: Apidura doesn’t see the bag merely as an addition to a large bikepacking setup. It’s also designed to appeal to riders who want to carry as little luggage as possible on their handlebars or back during long day trips.

Waterproof and designed for long distances

Like all products in the current Expedition range, the bag features a welded construction made from waterproof materials. It is made from a three-layer fabric with a cross-reinforced core. According to the manufacturer, the material is free from PFA and PFC compounds.

To allow for greater freedom of movement, the bag tapers towards the back. This is designed to ensure there is sufficient knee room. The zip sits relatively flat at the back and is also designed not to come into contact with the legs.

Practical details for bike packers

An internal compartment divides the main compartment and makes it easier to organise the contents. A cable outlet at the front allows you to charge your smartphone or GPS device whilst riding, without having to leave the zip open. There are also elasticated mesh pockets on the outside for frequently used small items.

Anyone who already owns other Apidura bags will be pleased to know that the attachment points are designed to fit the current Expedition frame bags. This means that both bags can use the same set of attachment straps.

Editorial conclusion

The new Apidura Expedition Long Top Tube Pack It fills an interesting niche between a traditional top-tube bag and small frame bags. Long-distance cyclists and bike packers in particular are likely to appreciate the extra storage space. The combination of a waterproof design, cable routing and clever integration into the existing Expedition system is typical of Apidura.
