The heatwave has Germany firmly in its grip. Anyone who, when temperatures are above 30 degrees, isn’t wilting in the shade by the lake but is instead sweating profusely whilst cycling, should definitely bear in mind the increased need for fluids when exercising.
In mountain biking, there are additional factors to consider: prolonged periods of exertion, varying levels of intensity and frequent technical sections that require concentration. A steady supply of fluids helps to delay a drop in performance, maintain a high level of concentration and stabilise muscle function and coordination.
Particularly in summer conditions or on long rides, a properly functioning hydration system is therefore not just a convenience feature, but an essential part of your kit. In such situations, staying hydrated using a hydration bladder such as the New Hermetic Hydration Bladder from Fidlock.
The key innovation of the Fidlock hydration bladder lies in its closure system. Instead of traditional screw-top or clip-on closures, Fidlock uses three rows of self-closing magnets that snap together automatically. The result is that the opening effectively closes ‘by itself’, without needing to be positioned precisely. This feature makes handling much easier when filling the bladder before a ride or, above all, whilst out and about.
In addition, a mechanical SNAP fastening secures the flap, ensuring that the bladder does not open accidentally, even on rough descents.
As well as its high level of leak-proofing, Fidlock focuses on making the product as easy to use as possible. The hydration bladder features a large opening, which makes filling and cleaning easier. Compared to traditional systems, where caps have to fit perfectly, this reduces the effort involved, particularly before a quick post-work run or when out on a ride.
Fidlock has deliberately designed the Hermetic for off-road use. According to the manufacturer, the bladder remains reliably leak-proof even when subjected to severe vibrations or impacts. Fidlock demonstrates this in a practical scenario: even after falls or if the bottle is dropped, the magnetic closure snaps shut again immediately. This tackles a classic problem with many hydration systems – liquid leaking into the rucksack.
The Hermetic Hydration Bladder is available in several versions:
The latter in particular is likely to appeal to trail cyclists who ride without a large rucksack but still want to carry enough fluids with them. All versions are made from BPA-free, flavourless TPU.
The Hermetic Hydration Bladder is primarily designed to make using a hydration bladder a more hassle-free experience. Instead of having to fold the opening over once to seal the bladder and hope that no liquid leaks out, the Hermetic hydration bladder seals itself virtually automatically once it has been filled.
Whilst riding, however, the difference compared to traditional hydration bladders is likely to be less pronounced. In the past, we’ve also had very little to complain about in terms of leaky closures or leaking bladders with competing products. All in all, Fidlock is offering not so much a traditional update as an alternative approach, which is particularly appealing when ease of use and reliability are the main priorities.
