In 2015, Conway introduced the WME (We Make Enduro) presents its first enduro MTB. After four years on the market, it's time for a thorough renovation. Conway developer Tom Farbacher told us at the Eurobike Media Days: "A hell of a lot has happened in the enduro segment over the last four years. Our new WME models are in line with the latest developments on the market." His colleague Andreas Banse adds in the Eurobike video that the WME is a top rideable enduro bike, but also a bike with which you can ride an Alpine cross.
In future, Conway customers will have the choice between a bike with 27.5-inch wheels and 170 millimetres of travel or a 29er with 150 millimetres of travel. The carbon main frame remains the same for both models. The different geometries and suspension travel are the result of different rear triangles, a higher headset and shocks of different lengths.
When developing and specifying the new WMEs, Conway placed particular emphasis on a low overall weight. A ready-to-ride 29-inch prototype at Eurobike Mediadays weighed just 12.7 kilos without pedals. An excellent value. In addition, the geometry has been significantly modernised compared to the previous model with a 65 degree steering angle, 467 millimetre reach (in size L) and 440 millimetre chainstays (430 millimetres on the 27.5).
In future, all cables will be neatly routed inside the main frame, and there is a boot under the bottom bracket for stowing a spare tube and mini-tool. The full carbon frames come in sizes S, M, L and XL. From December 2019, there will be three 29er models between 2900 and 4300 euros. For the 27.5-inch bikes, there will even be four equipment variants, with prices ranging from 3000 to 6500 euros.
We were able to ride the first 29er prototype at Kronplatz. However, there are still some changes to be made for the final frame, especially to the rear triangle, so we don't want to pass judgement on the new bike. But the short test ride has awakened a certain excitement in us. You will soon be able to read how the production bikes fared in the test in the print edition of BIKE.
