A visual treat, technically sophisticated. Unfortunately, the new Commençal Meta Power TR lacks an entry-level version at the low price typical of mail order bikes.

With the introduction of the new Shimano EP8 Commençal presented us with the second edition of the Meta Power at the end of 2020. With up to 180 millimetres of travel, the ballerbolide is aimed at enduro riders and bike park riders. Trail and touring bikers did not find what they were looking for with the Andorra-based company. Until now. Because Commençal is expanding its E-portfolio with the Meta Power TR. The newcomer is visually similar to its larger siblings and is also powered by the Shimano EP8. Battery capacity: also 630 watt hours. The suspension travel, however, has been reduced to 150 millimetres at the front and 140 millimetres at the rear.

With its large 29-inch wheels and robust aluminium frame, the bike is nevertheless equipped for rough terrain. This is also noticeable in the weight. The high-end version in size S weighs a full 24.4 kilos. In terms of geometry, the developers have kept their finger on the pulse. The reach is long (485 mm in size L) and the steering angle of 64.5 degrees is very slack for a trail bike.

The top model comes for 6999 euros with Fox Factory suspension elements, Shimano XT components and DT Swiss wheels. Two other models are available for 5999 and 5199 euros. For a mail order company, the entry-level price is therefore quite high. Despite the aluminium frame.

Professionally, the experienced test editor now focusses on e-mountainbikes. In recent years, the qualified sports scientist and trained journalist has tested over 300 bikes and more than 40 different motor systems in the laboratory and in practice.
