The top dog among backpacks also offers the right model for commuters - mission accomplished, we would say. Nevertheless, the question remains: Why so expensive? There are so many practical commuter features in the Deuter Amager 25+5.

The Augsburg-based label Deuter has been around since 1898 and is particularly well-known for its ergonomic rucksacks, which offer maximum comfort for hiking, trekking and everyday use. Deuter also launched the first ever MTB backpack on the market >> Time jump - Deuter BIKE 1 backpack from 1991 & Deuter Trans Alpine (2024) <<

For the test, Deuter sent us the new Deuter Amager 25+5 roll-top backpack for a whole 200 euros. This makes the commuter rucksack one of the most expensive on the market. The backpack is available z. e.g. here in five colours .

The Deuter Amager 25+5: Why plus 5?

The Deuter impresses with its modern roll-top construction and waterproof outer material. The numbers in the name provide information about the volume, which Deuter usually states reliably. With the Amager model, however, we were only able to measure 20 litres instead of the stated 25 + 5 litres. If more is packed inside, the roll-top can no longer be closed watertight. The logo is made of reflective material and glows in the headlights, but we would have liked additional reflectors, as commuters are often travelling in traffic in the dark.

Bag management: Good but not great

With a capacity of 20 litres, the backpack offers enough space for the essentials. There is only one external compartment, on the side for your smartphone. Unfortunately, there are no side pockets for water bottles or spare inner tubes. Instead, the rucksack has several eyelets and loops for attaching a helmet, jacket or lock.

The light-coloured main compartment provides a good overview and contains a removable laptop compartment for devices up to 15 inches, another compartment for magazines or notepads and a mesh pocket for keys and other valuables. There is little space for spare tubes or additional equipment - we would have expected more pockets from Deuter here.

Wearing comfort & safety: Super & good

The wearing comfort is excellent. The tried-and-tested Airstripe back system ensures a good fit and optimum ventilation. The shoulder straps are pleasantly padded and the lightweight hip fins also contribute to comfort, although they do not have a mesh pocket for tools. Overall, the rucksack scores almost full marks in this category.

My conclusion on the Deuter Amager 25+5

The Deuter Amager 25+5 The pendulum backpack impresses above all with its first-class carrying system, which sits comfortably on the back and offers a high level of carrying comfort. It is also waterproof and scores points with well thought-out little details. However, there is some criticism: we would have liked more pockets, including on the outside, and the price is high. In addition, the actual volume in practice is slightly less than stated.

This is how we tested it:

We tested each rucksack for at least 60 kilometres, mostly with a medium load and rather fresh to mild temperatures of 3 to 13 °C. We did not rely on the manufacturer's volume specifications, but instead filled the backpacks with specially filled bags - there were certainly deviations. In addition, the rucksacks were weighed and tested for their reflective elements; there is still room for improvement in almost all models.
Most of the rucksacks are made of waterproof outer material. Some materials only have a water-repellent effect - we tested these under the shower head.

What counts for him is not how fast you get from A to B, but what happens in between. Lehner writes reports, interviews scene celebrities and tests products and bikes - preferably those with a lot of suspension travel.
