It's not a question of if, but when you buy new tyres. At the latest when the original tyres are worn out, you are forced to look for replacements. Most bikers change the black rubber even before the first carcass threads shimmer through the worn treads or have other tyres fitted when they buy their bike. For good reason. Because no other component on the bike influences the handling more than the tyres. We tested 21 tyres in practice and in the laboratory. The results are exciting, but are the new tyres really better than their predecessors?
We tested these tyres:
CROSS COUNTRY
ALL MOUNTAIN
ENDURO
ENDURO RACE
What values actually determine whether a tyre is good or bad? The requirements for a tyre differ considerably between the categories. While cross-country or marathon riders are looking for the lowest possible weight and rolling resistance, enduro riders are primarily interested in maximum grip. With the exception of puncture protection, all other values are extremely dependent on the composition of the rubber compound. Markus Hachmeyer, Head of Development at Schwalbe, explains why the perfect tyre can only be a compromise: "Rubber compounds either have good damping and therefore a lot of grip, or they roll well." Both properties repel each other like the polarised ends of two magnets. But things are boiling over in the manufacturers' laboratories. Last year, Vittoria tried to create the ultimate all-rounder rubber with the new miracle material graphene. The Italian tyres mixed with the miracle material were not bad, but still far from the theoretical ideal. Now Schwalbe is announcing the big hit. Since 2015, more than 30 employees of the German market leader have been working on new raw material formulas to make the impossible possible. The intensive development phase has paid off, as the Schwalbe tyres with the new Addix compounds have caused quite a stir in laboratory tests. On the rolling resistance test bench, the new soft compound on the Magic Mary Evolution tyre is particularly surprising. With 26 watts of resistance, the classic enduro tyre rolls almost a third lighter than its predecessor with the old Trailstar compound. Amazing, but can the tyre also score points in the practical test with plenty of grip?
Bikewelt Schöneck offers the ideal conditions for the practical test with numerous different types of trails. To check the traction of the tyres, we even rode some of the routes uphill, contrary to their original design. This is probably nothing special any more, especially since the trend towards e-bike trails, but the method produced good results. We tested the cornering grip of the individual tyres both on the man-made crushed sand tracks and on the natural single trails. The best results in terms of grip were clearly achieved by the heavy tyres with ultra-soft rubber compounds from the Enduro Race test field. The theory of repulsive poles is fully applicable here. All three heavyweights have extremely high rolling resistance but, as you would expect, are bursting with grip. The normal enduro and all-mountain groupset is where things get exciting. Will the new Addix Soft compound deliver the promised compromise?
Stone fields, root carpets and nasty hanging bends: our test track for cornering grip is probably for tyres what a Tough Mudder obstacle course is for humans. It's so challenging that many a tyre simply smears in the bend. But the new wonder tyre delivers what it promises, because at the end of a long day of testing, the tyre-magnet theory is finally overturned. The new Magic Mary Addix Soft tyre not only impresses in the lab with its low rolling resistance, but also with top grip in corners. Until now, this was an impossibility.
However, choosing the right tyre remains difficult. During our test, we noticed another conflict within a tyre. Either a tyre is heavy or puncture-proof. Now that the dilemma of rolling resistance and grip has been solved, it's time for the developers to work on the contradictions between puncture protection and weight.
Conclusion Ludwig Döhl, BIKE tester:
No yin without yang. What a tyre gains in rolling resistance, it loses in grip. The same applies to the opposites of puncture protection and weight. Schwalbe's new Addix Soft compound solves at least one of these two problems. However, the decision to buy a new tyre is still down to personal preference.

TUNING
Even the best tyres perform poorly with the wrong air pressure or on a rim that is too narrow. With these tips, tyres will develop their full potential.
1. suitable rim width
Wide tyres are all the rage. However, the thick tyres can only develop their full potential if they are mounted on a correspondingly wide rim. For cross-country use, we recommend a rim width of 22.5 millimetres, while 2.3-2.4 touring tyres feel most comfortable on a 25 millimetre rim. Enduro riders with extremely wide tyres are increasingly turning to rims with a rim width of 30 millimetres.
2. ride tubeless
If you want to squeeze every last ounce of performance out of your tyres, you should replace the inner tubes with tubeless milk in the tyres. The conversion is not that complicated, and you can then ride with significantly less air pressure and be even more puncture-proof on the road. You can find out exactly how it works on www.bike-magazin.de Webcode: #26577
3. deflate
Too much air in the tyres not only reduces grip on the trail, but also increases rolling resistance because the inflated tyres are less able to adapt to the ground. But beware: If the tyres are underinflated, there is a risk of puncture. Depending on the weight, we recommend 1.5-2 bar.
THE TYRE STRUCTURE
1. rubber compound
The outermost layer of the tyre is made of rubber and forms the tread. High-quality tyres have different rubber compounds in one tyre. A softer rubber compound is often used on the side lugs for more cornering grip. The centre tread of the tyre, on the other hand, is often made of a harder rubber compound to reduce rolling resistance and wear.
2. carcass
The carcass serves as a carrier material for the rubber compound and consists of nylon threads. The thinner the threads, the more flexible the carcass. High-quality tyres usually have 120 threads per inch (TPI). Cheaper models are significantly coarser with 30 TPI. Enduro or downhill tyres use several layers of carcass on top of each other for better puncture protection.
3. puncture protection
A rubber wedge (apex) protects some tyres from impacts on the rim flange. In addition, each manufacturer has its own protective fabric to protect the tyres from sharp-edged stones or thorns. (Schwalbe: Snakeskin, Continental: Protection, Maxxis: Exo-Protection). Nowadays, even cross-country professionals are prepared to accept the slight additional weight of this protective layer in order to avoid defects.

KENDA Saber Pro
29 inch
Price / Info 59,90 Euro www.kendatire.com
Rubber compound / TPI¹ Triple compound / 120 TPI
Designation / Size Kenda Saber Pro, tubeless-ready / 29x2.2
