The new Stamp 1 Gen 2 MTB pedals from Crankbrothers should have more bite - and that is to be understood literally: They now have 40 pins. Ok, 10 pins per side, which makes 40 for two pedals and sides. And there is one more pin per side than on the first generation of the Stamp 1.
The new Crankbrothers Stamp 1 pedal is only 15.5 millimetres thin on the outside and 13.5 millimetres in the middle - a more concave, i.e. inwardly curved, tread surface should provide better slip resistance compared to its predecessor. The flat pedals are also quite large, especially in the large size:
The large pedals (Large) weigh 348 grams, the small pedals (Small) 321 grams per pair. Crankbrothers states that the large pedal should be purchased from shoe size 43.5. The new Stamp 1 bicycle pedals come in the colours black, navy, orange, purple and red.
The new MTB pedal is said to have a more robust housing than its predecessor. It is designed for use in demanding terrain and for durability and is based on the same components as the Stamp 7 pedal. When BIKE last tested the Crankbrothers pedals, our editors wished for more grip. Test conclusion at the time: "Light and cheap, but poor grip."
Whether the successor, the Stamp 1 (2023), can fulfil this remains to be seen. According to their own statement, they have responded to the calls for more grip with the new second-generation pedal. The pedals are sealed with the Seal System. This prevents water from penetrating the material.
We have already tested shoes to match the MTB flat pedals. Crankbrothers offers its own collection of shoes for mountain bikers that are compatible with the pedals.
