The Phase series is divided into the XC-Trail and Enduro-DH model ranges. For cross-country and trail bikes, Newmen offers handlebars 760 millimetres wide, with a choice of 10 or 25 millimetres of rise. The Enduro-DH versions are 800 millimetres wide without an adjustment system and are available with a rise of 25 or 40 millimetres. Both model ranges are available for stems with 31.8- or 35-millimetre clamping diameters.
The Phase XC-Trail with a 35-millimetre clamp, 760-millimetre width and 10-millimetre rise has the lowest stated weight: Newmen quotes 166 grams for this version. The classic XC-Trail models weigh between 166 and 172 grams in total, whilst the Enduro-DH versions without VariGrip weigh 180 and 186 grams respectively. Subtle lettering ensures the carbon handlebars maintain a understated look.
In terms of design, Newmen has taken inspiration from its Beskar and Performance aluminium handlebars. All Phase models combine an 8-degree backsweep with an 8-degree upsweep. According to the manufacturer, the comparatively pronounced upsweep is designed to promote a comfortable wrist position, both in a neutral riding posture and in a sporty downhill position.
Newmen hopes this will reduce fatigue without the need for a particularly pronounced backsweep. However, how well the geometry suits each individual rider also depends on their personal cockpit set-up.
The most striking feature of the optional VGS versions is the adjustable handlebar width. Newmen’s patented VariGrip system works via a threaded section at the end of the handlebar and a matching counterpart in the grip. On the XC-Trail, the overall width can be adjusted between 710 and 760 millimetres, whilst on the Enduro-DH it can be adjusted between 760 and 810 millimetres.
To adjust the width, loosen the lock-on clamp, set the desired width using the scale, and then retighten the clamp. Unlike when shortening the handlebars, the adjustment can be reversed within the specified range. This makes the system particularly appealing to cyclists who are still trying to find their preferred handlebar width or who wish to compare different settings.
Suitable VariGrip grips are required. Newmen offers the Resia, Slat and Blok models for this purpose, which differ in profile, thickness and hardness. The VGS handlebars themselves weigh between 181 and 209 grams, depending on the model.
According to the company, Newmen tests the phase control arms in its in-house laboratory using dynamic and static loads. During these tests, tensile and compressive forces act simultaneously or alternately on the control arms, which are clamped in the driving position. In addition, static loads are applied and maintained over a specific period of time.

In terms of price, Newmen makes no distinction between the classic handlebars and the VGS versions: the XC Trail models cost 160 euros each, whilst the Enduro DH models cost 165 euros each. The documentation does not specify whether there are any additional costs for the required VariGrip grips, or what these might be.
The Phase series therefore offers a wide range of cockpit options. Whilst the classic models stand out primarily for their stated weight, the VGS versions feature an adjustable width.
