Bike Ahead Composites is expanding its integrated carbon cockpit range to include a new stem length of 77 millimetres. This is intended to ensure the system is also compatible with modern geometry designs and innovative 32-inch wheel platforms. What’s more, the Bike Ahead The Cockpit 77 still weighs less than 300 grams in total.

Bike Ahead is gearing up for the future of gravel bikes and is now adapting its in-house handlebar-stem unit to meet the requirements of a 32-inch gravel bike. To this end, a shorter version of the lightweight cockpit has been introduced specifically for this purpose. Many of the 32-inch designs seen to date are longer and taller than their 28- or 29-inch counterparts, and the new 77-millimetre version of ‘The Cockpit’ promises an optimised fit as well as more direct steering response for the new, larger wheels. The price: just under 1,000 euros. But that is by no means all there is to report on the Bike Ahead The Cockpit.

Conclusion

It’s impressive just how many variants Bike Ahead can conjure up from a single mould. The Bavarian manufacturer is providing a significant impetus for the future and is gearing up its cockpit range for the next generation of 32-inch gravel bikes. However, the new 77 variant is also of interest for existing wheel sizes. Personally, I’m a fan of gravel bikes with a long frame and a short cockpit! - Jan Timmermann, BIKE editor

Bike Ahead: The Cockpit 77 in detail

  • Intended use: gravel bike / road bike
  • Material: Carbon
  • Weight: from 299 grams
  • Price: 998.99 euros
  • Special features: 60 different configurations available, lifetime crash replacement, made in Germany

60 different variants

This means that The Cockpit is now available in no fewer than 60 different configurations. The German carbon experts are aiming, in particular, to appeal to road and gravel cyclists who place great importance on precisely tuning their riding position. With the new 77 mm version, the range now comprises six stem lengths: 77, 88, 99, 111, 122 and 133 millimetres. Added to this are five handlebar widths ranging from 360 to 440 millimetres in 20-millimetre increments. Combined, this results in 30 possible configurations. With a choice of two different drop variants, a total of 60 variants are available. For use on loose terrain, there is a version with a different ergonomic design and a greater flare, which promises additional control. Those who prefer a classic road bike handlebar can opt for the version with reduced flare. This allows the cockpit to be tailored to both sporty aero set-ups and comfort-oriented gravel configurations.

The balance between comfort, stiffness and weight

According to Bike Ahead, the development of The Cockpit did not focus on maximum stiffness at any cost. Instead, the so-called S³ Technology – short for ‘Sweet Spot Stiffness’ – is designed to strike a balance between comfort and direct handling. To achieve this, Bike Ahead combines an aerodynamically optimised top tube shape with a specially tuned carbon lay-up. The design allows for targeted flex in the top tube area, which is intended to dampen vibrations and impacts, thereby reducing fatigue on longer rides. At the same time, the structural stiffness is designed to ensure precise steering, direct power transfer and excellent directional stability. The aim is a cockpit that offers comfort on long rides without compromising on control or riding dynamics. Bike Ahead states that The Cockpit weighs from 299 grams.

Visually, Bike Ahead has opted for the characteristic True Carbon finish on The Cockpit, which leaves the carbon structure visible. The exposed fibre structure emphasises the craftsmanship and gives the cockpit a distinctive look. On request, the cockpit can be professionally painted to match the design of the respective bike. Bike Ahead can arrange for experienced painting partners to carry out this work.

Beautiful griffin

A key aesthetic advantage of the Bike Ahead The Cockpit System is said to be its broad compatibility with different frame platforms. According to the Vetishöchheim-based brand, specially developed top covers, headset covers and so-called transition spacers enable integration into bikes from more than 20 brands. These include, amongst others, 3T, Basso, BMC, Colnago, Specialized, Wilier, Orbea and Rose. The respective adapter solutions are designed to enable a technically sound and visually harmonious integration into the various frames. Bike Ahead is also open to models not yet supported: on request, the company develops bespoke adapter solutions, provided the technical specifications of the respective frame allow for this. The design and production of a suitable adapter usually takes four to six weeks.

The Cockpit comes as standard with an integrated GPS mount that is compatible with common cycle computers. The design requires no additional screws or external clamps: two carbon tubes secure the mount within the cockpit structure. Weighing from 12.5 grams, the mount is said to be one of the lightest solutions of its kind. Those requiring greater flexibility can opt for a longer or angle-adjustable version. A mount for action cameras is also available for these variants.

Lifetime crash replacement

Bike Ahead provides the statutory warranty on The Cockpit, as well as a two-year manufacturer’s warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. In addition, a lifetime crash replacement programme is available to first owners. If the Cockpit is rendered unusable due to a fall, accident or other damage, original purchasers can purchase a replacement product at a discounted price. The specific terms and conditions are available from the manufacturer.
